Very very nice work indeed, certainly a job well done.
My question and comments. Was it your choice to lay the grain at the bottom of the posts horizontal and not vertically. For my self it doesn't sit right being horizontal. On the posts at the top of the stairs its not so notice able. However its on the post at the bottom of the stairs where its most noticeable.

I agree, but I hadn't actually noticed it until you pointed it out! I normally spot stuff like that straight off. But, as tjbier said, it'g going to be painted so I don't suppose you'll really see the grain throught the paint (depending on what timber it is, he didn't say, but it looks a very tight grain).

EDIT: Looking at the pics again, it looks like tulipwood/poplar, so the grain won't be seen through the paint.

JRB is spot on, yes it is going to be painted. If it were stained I would either use very clear poplar
or run the base verticaly. I am looking at I now and the piece of base is 2 1x10 glued, the board is just
  that green and clear.
Lostinthewoods: it is a new home so setup is great, however doing these on remodel in not, lol.
But that was before a CT was in the picture, now sanding inside isn't so bad

Stairs look realy nice, so different from what we do over here.  One thing i am not keen on is where the handrail goes to the wall & fits onto a small block of wood.  We always have a "Half Newel" fixed to the wall but im not sure how that would look on your stair as the newels are so bulky, might be ok though.
Why is the nosing trim stopped ?  Is it for the carpet, cost or some other reason.  Looks like a substantial house though.

Yea, yea JMB.  I did read that it was a carpet but i have never seen the nosings stopped like that before.  Could be a cost issue but with a house like that i doubt it, could be that when the carpet goes around the front edge it is flush with the nosing ?  Just wasnt sure why it is done like that, never seen that before.  Its probably to get the carpet tight against the riser.  Happy  [poke]  [tongue]

That's how I was told to do it [wink] There were supposed to be half newels opposite the hallway on the balcony and pillars under the balcony matching the balcony newels.
but that all got nixed I guess.
And as JMB (politely, LOL) pointed out the carped will be butted into the stair nosing andin theory sit flush with the nosing.
They are bulky, they end up being 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"

They saying " don't ask me, I just work here" comes into mind.
