Current opinions on domino size for 3/4" ply

I'm going to pick up a domino at the tail end of the sale and I was curious what size dominos people are using for 3/4" ply. I read through old posts and there was some discussion on 5mm vs. 6mm and the rule of thirds, etc... But I'm really interested in what is being used successfully on a daily basis.

Thanks.

5MM works all day long for me. I'd rather not risk getting a touch off on a 6mm mortise and have the outline of a swollen tenon showing on the surface of 3/4" /19mm/18mm thickness work. So, I always use 5mm, esp. with slightly thinner baltic birch type plywood.

A major advantage of the 5x30 is not having to adjust the depth.  For the 6x40 you need to adjust between 15 and 25 mm - bad if one forgets which plunge you are making.  I've found the 5 mm to be plenty strong.

I use 5mm tenons more often than any other. Also, if you get the domino tenon systainer which comes with a set of cutters, you will have 2x5mm cutters so you can use twice as many 5mm tenons before your cutter dulls compared to the other cutters.

elfick,

If you are going to get the Domino, I would suggest that you also get the Domino Assortment with the cutter set.

Are you getting the 500 or 700?  If you get the 700, you have a much larger range of depth stops and can do both the 5 and 6mm dominos with ease and without switching a lot. I build a floating ply desk for my son with all 6mm dominos and the 700XL.

Love that machine.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm getting the 700, the Seneca adapter, the Domino (500) Tenon Assortment, and the Domino 12/14 Tenon Assortment.

I'm debating the 8/10mm assortment. I was going to ask in a separate thread, but may as well do so here...

Is the 8/10mm range sufficiently covered by the DF500 Assortment or should I also get the DF700 8/10mm assortment?

Thanks!

I've got both and they have a small percentage of duplicate. As the 700 8/10mm assortment does have 8x50mm and 10x50mm dominoes in it. The rest are 80mm and 100mm long, which are not in the 500 assortment systainer.

I got the 8/10 & 12/14 DF700 assortment and then just bought bulk package of 6mm dominos.  This covered me for tons of 3/4" ply work, plus various thicker woods.

I ended up ordering all 3 tenon assortments along with the DF700 and the rts-500 adapter from Tool Nut yesterday morning and it is already on its way. I can't wait to get it in my grubby little hands.  [big grin]

You're going to be delighted with the results Lee.  You're setting yourself up for success.....
