Custom Acrylic Sewing Table Insert

I got my wife a sewing machine and a RTA sewing cabinet with a built in lift for her birthday this year.

You could buy a custom acrylic insert for flat table sewing, but it cost $164 and it would take 2-4 weeks to be custom made.

I figured I could make one for cheaper and right away.  I started off making the template out of cardboard and then transitioned to 1/4" MDF.  This was my first time working with acrylic.  It's stinky and messy stuff.  I turned the speed down on my TSC55, but it still stunk when cutting it.  The "snow" that was made routing the acrylic was sort of cool, at least at first.  I really should have used the router table, but I was too lazy to get it out and set up.  It's not perfect, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out and it only cost about $35 for the piece of acrylic.

Nice job. It looks very nice.
However, I can't imagine having to "get out" a router table. I use mine so frequently, I couldn't be without it.

Thanks!  I like to use the "get out and set up" excuse as the reason why I don't build more things.

It seems like it would be really nice if one had a big shop with everything already in place ready to go.

It definitely is. The space where I work is about 40' x 50' and if I need more, it can be done pretty easily.
It's going to be a huge mental jump when I retire and have to work in my home shop which is only 12' x 24'. It does have some auxiliary space, but it's through a doorway, in another room.
Currently, my workbench alone is 50" x 130" and that will never get it in such a small space.
