Also, would I dare to leave it open in the front or does it really need to be covered by glass?

I have a good friend and avid golfer like myself who also collects golf balls of all the courses he or a friend has played.  He displayed his in a cabinet without the glass.  He also lives in San Francisco.  You know where this is headed...  During the big quake of 1989, all those balls shot out of the cabinet like a cannon!  There were hundreds of balls everywhere in the house.  Took him a long time find them all and then painstakingly replace them to their original position. Now he has a glass front on them!
