Hi there,
I don't have a suggestion for a jig or an enhancement of the MFT/3, however, I hope mine comes before the end of the next week and I'll get to play with it. In the mean time, and even before purchasing the MFT/3, I kept contemplating "can I make my own MFT/3?" The answer has been no (due to lack of skills) and I wanted to get everyone's opinions and/or ideas.
I recently purchased the MFT/3 and QWAS dogs + Rail Dogs because I felt it would be a better base start to get more accurate cuts rather than cutting on the ground on a styrofoam board. I kept going back and forth "is it just a fancy table? how would i build my own?" Because of lack of experience and not knowing what exactly I wanted and also seeing so many well experienced people using a MFT/3 rather than building their own, I figured they bought one for a reason.
With that said, now that you've lived with your MFT/3, are there any enhancements you would make to the TOP of your MFT/3? Many people use it as a squaring tool using QWAS dogs or Precision dogs and what not, however, I have access to a CNC machine and I can pretty much make the top however I want.
Some things I thought about, however, don't have the experience to figure out what exactly it should be (if this makes sense), is that doing some reading, I read that the holes are 96mm apart. Is that 96mm center to center or edge hole to edge hole?
What about changing the distance between the holes? Say 50mm or ______mm? I ask because obviously, I don't have a MFT/3 yet and have never used one, however, there are a ton of threads about "I modified my MFT/3 by doing ______"
Maybe you guys have said "I really wish the MFT/3 had channel for an Incra T-track, or ___________ or _________"
Many people have talked about making their own tops, however, everyone likes the precision of the top because it was a CNC milled piece and I could have MFT tops customized. Maybe you want your name inscribed on it? Beats me! Replacement tops seem pricey at $135, however, it's CNCed so you know it's pretty darn accurate
I hope this thread makes sense? Just getting ideas. Maybe ya'll will post "it's pointless, move on!", which is fine too.
Not sure if I could say this, but given demand, I could also have a bunch of these made.
