I know Festool offers a Sys 1 for RO90 abrasives but its lay flat organization doesn't maximize space and offers about 8 stacks which limits variety. So I decided to stand the abrasives on edge instead and mocked up this organizer for a Sys 2 that gives me 21 slots with removable dividers with space on the sides for extra pads. I'll be trying out this cardboard mockup for a while to see what might need improving but this will help me organize my growing inventory of abrasives and polishing pads for this awesome sander.

I was frustrated with the range of abrasives that could be housed in a RO90 abrasive Systainer, so I purchased a second. A little while later I went for a LS130 abrasives Systainer ... but received another RO90 instead in a shipping error. I kept it and now I have three ...

I still have a RO90 abrasives sample set and part boxes in another sys5 with lots of other part and full boxes of Festool abrasives [embarassed]

I still have gaps in grit series too.

For a home based DIYer like me I'm starting to think good old drawers and dividers may be a better solution ... and a good old cupboard for the part empty boxes [sad]

I like having the tool in a Systainer and possibly another for accessories, but the abrasives get out of control when you have half a dozen different Festool sanders.

Multiple abrasive systainers for one sander is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Just want to open one box and have all my selections available. Since I'm staying with Granat as my main paper until I need something over 1500 this box should suffice for rounds, deltas as well as polishing pads and bonnets. It still leaves the need for storing all those open boxes but at least I won't be sifting through them every time.

Looks good.  [thumbs up]

I did a custom dividers Sys for the LS130 abrasives so that I could get all the pads and  sheets into one. Currently I am using two Festool RO90 Sys - I abrasive  systainers  for the 90 . One for round and one for delta.  Looks like capacity wise the your set up has about 26" worth of abrasive stacking space. The Festool version has about 20". So my arrangement of using two is about 40" and 2" more of Systainer height to carry and two Sys to open / stack.  You've got it all in one unit and more abrasive slots could go along the sides.  I can get all the RO90 pads into the sander Sys. Might need to change my set up.

Please post an update when you are done trying it out and do a final version.

Seth

Yea, my focus was on variety vs volume, but since I sanded all the paint off of 5 window sills using one piece of granat, it's hard to imagine I would ever deplete a single dividers worth of papers in one day with the kind of work I do. Other peoples mileage varies of course. Not sure what I'll build the final from yet, but the dividers will be thinner than this cardboard giving a bit more total volume as well. I may add even more divider dados to increase the number of available storage slots and greater slot size flexibility.

Paul,  Very nice looking.  I just bought a RO90 the other day and passed on the abrasives systainers because I also felt it wouldn't hold enough variety.  I can't think of applications when I am going to need 75-100 sheets of the same grit let alone even 10 so the vertical storage makes much more sense.
I'm assuming you couldn't fit 4 rows so I am curious if you could rotate your setup 90 degrees and fit 3 rows deep and make use of some of that wasted space on the right and left?

I would check it out myself but my stuff is in shipment and not supposed to arrive tomorrow

Thanks

Yea, I had hoped I could run 3 rows the other way but no dice. In my current configuration the space on the sides won't be wasted for me, it is where I'll be keeping extra pads, will end up with at least 6. But as Seth was indicating that space could certainly be used to hold 2 shorter rows of more abrasives turned 90 degrees.

I did a mod on a Sys2 for my RO 90 a year ago and am delighted with the way it turned out.

Very nice, I figured I couldn't possibly be the first to try something like this, thanks for sharing your design. I really like the idea of getting 4 rows in, but still would like to have adjustable slots. Not sure how that could work on the outer rows, something new to consider :)
