What would be the Domino way to make a cutlery tray?

Use the 4mm tenons for the partitions.

Do a search for "domidrawer" and you will see some drawer ideas. Here's my example.

But wouldn't you need to assemble the sides and the partitions in one go with this method?

And would you cut rebates or not? Also, just butt joints?

This is what I'm wondering about.

I'd go with rebates. All that cutlery knocking around will cause most butt joints to fail.

I would cut stopped dadoes in the drawer sides for the partitions and a groove for the drawer bottom, assemble the drawer, drop in the partition from the bottom, and slide in the bottom from the back.

It's similar to building a bookcase, but lying on its back.

Yes, you would have to assemble to the whole thing at once, but that shouldn't be a problem if you're using the design pictured.

During breaks and after dinner discussions, several of us considered cutlery trays and other drawer accessories while attending the Festool Doors and Drawers Class in Henderson, NV on 26 and 27 May 2011. Certainly 4mm Dominoes are very useful.

For 50 years I have purchased drawers from vendors, along with drawer accessories. My reasoning has been that many accessories are only sold a couple of times a year. Making that few it is not practical to compete with a drawer factory doing their thing.

However, my shop has enough space. Since May I have purchased from Alexander Dodds Company a CNC drawer dovetail machine and power assembly clamp. Of course I still have a mass of drawer catalogs and charge accounts with most leading vendors. Since I enjoy drawer building, with the right equipment, as I find the time I do want to experiment with several approaches to cutlery trays.

By the way, all of the cabinet makers working for me agree we should add to the staff a person who has an extra interest in drawer building. Of course we need that person to have all-round cabinet making skills. Anyone interested is encouraged to send me a PM or e-mail. We are equal opportunity and all that.

50 years  [eek] really? Man that's a lot of drawers and cutlery trays. I thought I was pushing it...  I guess I'd better pay attention when you speak (er, write)!  [big grin]

    Pretty much all of our projects get a drawer like this for silverware, steak knives and such.  They are made by Rev-a-Shelf but you can make one on your own if you want.  They are made to fit std. framed cabinet openings 12,15,18,21 and can be found by searching for "rev a shelf tiered cutlery drawer".  It's amazing how much stuff you can fit in one of these and have it all so well organized.  We use the Blum Orgaline components if people want stainless drawer boxes instead of wood.  Have you seen the Orgaline foil and plastic wrap in drawer dispenser?  Very cool!
