DECEMBER 2008: Sponsored by Bob Marino

Good Afternoon,
Making decisions about the winner of our contests seems to be getting more and more difficult every month!  Members are posting a growing number of projects, and displaying more skill and greater detail.  But that's what makes this such an exciting thing.

Well, Bob Marino picked a winner for December...

And that winner is...

Dave Ronyak, for his Four Piece Entertainment Center and Bookcases!

Dave did an excellent job on the project itself, photographing it all along the way, and he put an amazing amount of work into writing about the whole process for people here to read and learn from.

Congratulations to Dave for winning this month's contest.  And thank you also for putting so much energy into your wonderful project.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

The exact right person selected!  That was an outstanding project and excellent documentation all the way through!  Great job Dave!

I'm shocked and a bit overwhelmed.  I never expected to win anything!!  Thanks to all of you for your support and your help in making my posts possible (especially to Matthew and Brice with the technical aspects), and to Bob Marino for donating the prize.  I'm looking forward to using that sander!!

I hope to soon obtain the veneer needed to make some paneled doors for the TV Cabinet.  I will add them to the documentation and post a revised PDF.

Dave R.

Dave,
Don't be so modest -- you deserve it!

Just make sure to report back on how you use the sander.  Like everyone else, I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Dave,

You are most welcome! As others said, don't be modest - you did deserve it. The hardest part was choosing from such excellent projects and I mean that sincerely.
The sander and abrasives shipped yesterday from NJ.

Yeah, you deserve the win Dave!

I thought I'd show all of you the new "disk drive" I added to my Entertainment Center (top row, second from left).  It came with Plug-It cord and case and a second case filled with many "long-playing disks."  Don't you think it goes well among the other items on display?

Thanks to all of you for your support and help.  And a special thanks to Bob Marino (Uncle Bob) for contributing this wonderful prize.  I'll think of you whenever I use this fine machine.  Those sanding supplies should last a long time!

A note to all of you...Bob has proven his prescience once again.  Without asking, he sent an ETS 150/3 which is exactly the model I would have chosen had I spoken with him!  It will nicely complement my RO 125, ETS 125 (for which I have a very complete assortment of sanding and polishing supplies).  I also have some 6 inch Surbuff pads and Menzerna final polish to eventually use with this machine.

Dave R.

That has to be one of the fanciest sysports I've seen.  Congrats and thanks to Bob for sponsoring.

I used the ETS 150/3 for the first time today to sand off streaks on some boards due to a knicked knife in my planer.  That sander is one sweet tool!  Very quiet and smooooooth.  Thanks, again, Bob M.

Dave,
Congratulations on winning the contest for December.  What I enjoyed most was how you documented the project though posting and pictures, while the project was progressing.  Great format.

Lastly, Thank You Bob in sponsoring the contest.

Dave,

Just saw that you won this morning...congratulations man...very well done both in project execution and documentation that will be a valuable learning tool for many for a long long time to come.  I can't wait to see what you come up with next...

Best,
Todd

Thanks, Todd.  Below is the next project, after I finish adding one more drawer at the bottom level to my "Tim Allen" inspired "Man's Garage Cabinet."

I used my new sander on that drawer today and applied a coat of shellac.  The drawers are 33 1/4 inches wide by 23 1/2 inches deep.  The HD slides are rated 250 lb/pr and secured by 5 screws on each side to each of the cabinet and the drawer.

This is the next project.  I started cutting the oak.  This will be somewhat a "design as you build" project.  I'm probably making it more complicated and difficult than it needs to be, but I had problems trying to fully design it out using my very limited SketchUp skills, and dealing with being able to safely install the stone in the completed table.  The granite is 3ft x 3 ft x 1 1/8 inch thick and will be both recessed into and stand proud of the oak perimeter frame.  I hope to include a disguised drawer.

The granite top is waiting for its new "home."

Jan. 14, 2009 update.  The drawer is installed.
