Hi. I'm considering the purchase of a benchtop drill press. (not interested in a floor model at this time) Do I really need to go with something like a General tools model for for trouble free drilling or can I get by fine with something cheaper? I'm looking for model recommendations, that's if anybody here actually has gone the benchtop route. Thanks.

Hi Upscale

I have the jet JDP-15 benchtop drill (link below) and love it; it's done everything I've ever asked of it and is a seriously chunky bit of kit. Obviously I'm in the uk but assume models are similar over there.  I know lots of people with cheaper drills and they often find their lack of accuracy and longevity frustrating, but I've never used a cheaper one myself so it wouldn't be fair to discount them outright.

Good luck in your search.

One can obtain a decent one on craigslist at an acceptable price.  [smile]

Depends on what level of precision you're looking for.  I've got an old Craftsman 10" model that's plenty fine for drilling holes for Euro-style hinges, which is pretty much all I need it for.  If you're looking to fab parts for the space shuttle, something a bit better might be required.

I have the 12-inch variable speed Ryobi drill press.  Hard to beat pulling a lever to change the speeds.  I only had two complaints with it: depth stop is a bit fiddly to set, and not exactly rock solid, and the chuck was cheap.  I replaced the chuck with a spare Jacobs Super Chuck I had laying around... much nicer.  ~.001" runout.

It has since been supplanted by a Delta 18-900l, which also came fitted with a similarly cheapo chuck (and was remedied with another Super Chuck.)

I've got a pretty good selection of power tools that I spent a good chunk of money on, but my drill press was not one of those. I just needed to drill out some holes for cabinet hinges and got a Mastercraft from Canadian Tire. Built a nice table for it and am quite satisfied.
