Deck Ledger Flashed Wrong - Advice??

Anyone have any experience with this product?

http://www.afcoproducts.com/yorkShield106pt.asp

It was recommended as code compliant, which is meaningless to me at this point. It feels sort of flimsy, but it's bendable and easy to install. Can't use aluminum anymore so copper is about the only choice. Looking to see if anyone has used this material..I am on the fence if I should just get a roll of copper and bend it on a brake or if thats overkill for this application. Mike Guertin, the God of all deck builders, uses a nice 16 guage copper pre bent-picture below. Nice touch, but more $$ for material and more labor.

Any advice is appreciated!

Skids,

Look into Pro-Trim bendable vinyl coil.  Use it all the time at the Jersey Shore.  Bends with a brake, will not rot and a lot cheaper than copper.  It works with all woods, even pt.

They also now make a pre-bent 14" ledger board flashing.  I always buy the rolls because I own a break.  A great product.

What happens when I drive a nail through that stuff? Do I have to counter with Vycor before I install it?

That York stuff has a self sealing backing..

Flashing always goes on straight to plywood.  Then you overlap flashing with the house wrap (felt or Tyvek).  Then install siding.  The nails never are exposed to the weather.

Never install flashing on the outside of the house wrap.  It will always leak even if you use Grace Ice and Water shield, which I think is the best on the market.

I mean the last deck board, I understand the wall leg will be covered by siding...I plan on shimming that last board near the house and driving a screw into the ledger and the joist. Bad idea?

No problem with screwing to the ledger and the joist. If you worried about the screw penetration, put vycor on the ledger.

Leave at least 3/4" between the first plank and home.

The copper flashing you linked will be just fine, the cooper need not be thick. I did not check, but it may be backed with a sealing membrane.

Thanks Tom. Always helpful to hear your perspective.

Once this rain lets up I will put some vycor down over the ledger them flash with that copper roll.

That material has what they say is a self sealing backing (non asphaltic) and not sticky. Which may make it easier to work with.
