design advice needed - simple shelf units - how to maximize sheet goods

Hi all,

In the near future, I need to build something in the order of 56 lineal feet of simple shelf units on 5 different walls. Depths (with back) will go from 9 to 15". Widths will vary from 24 to 36", with many units Siamesed. Heights will vary from 24" (TV stand) up to 84". I will likely use 3/4" ply to make the boxes, and Domino's to fix them together. Most sides will be drilled with the LR-32 system, so that the shelves can be adjusted. So overall, nothing fancy. What I'm looking for is advice on how to maximize the sheet goods (programs, books, rules-of-thumb, etc.), as I am just at the design stage now and can tweak some dimensions here and there. Perhaps using 1/2" ply for the backs would be sensible to cut costs, but that makes Domino's to attach the backs iffy/difficult, and I'd like to avoid having to use rabbets if possible (KISS).

Many (/most/all) of these units will be painted, but some may possibly be prefinished Maple, and I assume that makes optimizing more difficult because of grain direction.

Thanks, Dick

something like this maybe?

shelving doesn't have to have thick backing, 1/8 can work just glue, nail or screw it in a rabbet

Thanks #1;

Good point on the 1/8" backing. Perhaps rabbets would be worth it.

Thanks for the link to the cut optimizer. I'm aware of this and several others. But what I'm really looking for is some design guidance that says if you make your backs this wide, and your sides and shelves this deep, you can optimize your sheet goods. And perhaps also your proportions will look good.  : )

[member=18203]dicktill[/member] – I see you're you’re set with a cut list recommendation so let me email you a set of CAD plans we are preparing to offer for sale online – you’ll get an advance copy as a reference for your personal use (only) at no charge.

The plans are laid out for a nominal 24 inch wide shelf unit, 7 ft. tall. The rabbet joinery is shown with a fixed shelf in the middle for rigidity. Having this will speed up your detailed cut-list by simply changing the dimensions to suit your needs.

hope this helps.

Thanks Hans. I can read dxf files.

[And, sheepishly, I still owe you a photo on our other correspondence.  : (  ]

Hi Hans,

Wow, just wow!. Can't get much more than that out of a sheet of plywood, and everything is in the right grain direction. Now if there is just some magic formula to get all the different depths and widths I need.  : )

Thanks, Dick

When are you planning on having it up on your website. Curious to see what the plans are.

[member=65145]manuc[/member] - are you ready to build something  like a shelf system very soon or just generally interested in the format and how detailed our plans are? - let me know and I'll respond further

I plan on building some built in drawers and shelving in a couple of closets. I was wondering how your plans integrated with Festool products. I have pretty much everything needed to build cabinets and shelving. I’ve looked at a lot of plans and YouTube videos. Just haven’t been able to get around to it yet with all the other things the wife has me doing in the house. I’m getting the guide rail squares and parallel guides from you guys once they are available. I hope the guides make quick work for all the cuts.

[member=65145]manuc[/member] - we'll email you a 2-D set of preliminary plans and let you be part of our BETA Testing. Let us know what you like and what can be improved.
You'll find our design a great opportunity for using the LR-32 System to advantage. Our plan is designed around it but does not require an LR-32. Use the Poplar Shop's YouTube video on the LR-32 System. invaluable!
