Another finishing question for my daughter's sewing cabinet.

I'm building a modified version of the Wood magazine cabinet. It has three tops - two that fold onto the main table. The tables are plywood and banded by 2" wide mitered hardwood.

Here is the issue scaring me. My daughter wants the wood dyed - pink. Problem is that I know there is going to be glue at the joint somewhere and I have found from samples this dye to be very less forgiving than wood stain for showing the glue.

I was wondering if maybe I should rout out a path at the joint to put in an inlay/epoxy? Or something else?

Thanks,

Mike

I’m not sure what you mean? Afraid the paint gets in the clue? Any change you can paint the plywood before you assemble/glue up?

Is this project in the future or underway?

If not assembled yet and you're anticipating glue-up problems then you can take steps to mitigate the glue squeeze before assembly.

Masking, carefully controlling glue placement and quantity, using special glues, pre-finishing all come to mind.

Thanks for the replies.

I can kick myself on this one. I was in bit of a rush to get the tops glued up. On two of them I forgot to wipe off the excessive glue before it dried.

I will pay the penalty but have found using a sharp chisel I can slowly remove the dried on glue. I'm afraid to try to just scrape/sand it all off because of the thinness of the veneer on the ply.

FYI - I did find some will mix dye into a small amount of their topcoat or de-waxed shellac and use a small painters brush to touch-up un-dyed spots.
