Dewalt 735 belt question

Hello all. In the process of installing helical cutter head on my 735. I’m having trouble putting the belt back on the pulley. Any tricks or suggestions on how to get it done? I can’t seem to stretch it enough

There are several YT videos on some solutions.  The one that worked for me is to get a turn the pulley with a socket on a 1/2" ratchet while feeding the belt with your hand.  I may not be describing it right as its been a year since I did it.  Using this method was much easier as the ratchet/socket gave me more control.

It's very tight. You need to roll it on and being a multi-rib belt that takes a little doing plus you don't want to damage it so be careful. There are a number of YT videos walking you through the process. Find them and FF to the section on installing the belt.

I know when I put mine on I was worried too. Mostly because my DW735 was over 12 years old when I made the upgrade so that belt has logged some hours and I did (and still don't) not have a spare.

Rick's idea of using a wrench is a good one.

Well the good thing is that the belt is not Kevlar reinforced so it is fairly flexible. As Bob & Rick have noted, it's a combination of turning the belt while also "guiding" the belt into proper position. I used a very thin shaft screwdriver to move it over the ribs on the pulleys while also turning the belt.

Thank you.  Will try again tonight.  I did see someone clamp to pull the pulley with the belt already on onto the shaft.  might give it a try.  ratchet socket idea might work as well.

Any one needs a belt I have an original Dewalt Belt I had bought for a backup for my DW735 but now have a Hammer A3-31.

This is what I tried to do yesterday.  Failed and ended up gouging the inside of the pulley and it no longer fits on to the shaft.  Shaft is still in good shape.  Ordered replacement pulley.  Going to try socket trick

Success. Used 24mm socket with ratchet and pushed the belt on as I was turning the ratchet

Now to install all the cutters
