Dewalt 735 width?

Hey guys, I need some help with info quick.

I'm going to put a Dewalt 735 planer with a Byrd head in my little shop, and today I'm designing the cabinets and countertops that it will sit on. If I were to put the planer sideways on a countertop, so that when facing the counter the planer will feed in on the left, and out on the right....would 25 inches be deep enough? I'm thinking that this orientation would put the wheel toward me and everything will be peachy.  I don't have one close enough to measure for myself, and I'm afraid I'll be an inch short if I don't ask somebody that has one.

Any help would be great.
Thanks

You'll be fine if you don't mind the handle on the wheel sticking out a little. I just went and measured mine.

Go with Metabo thicknesser  handle is on the top always accessible from any side.

Also dewalt machinery tools are always bulky, heavy and most of all underpowered.

How many watts a tool has means nothing  well it done with dewalt I have fallen in the trap every time with this high watts claim dewalt always has but a tool with half the amount of watts has more power.    Confuses me really!  Cus what do watts actually tell you? To me now its just a number and has no relevance.

Check out the rigid planer. I have one- it's fantastic. I did a review of it here on the fog somewhere. Cheaper than the dewalt, good dust control, if Festool made a benchtop planer I wouldn't switch it for this one.

Thanks for the reply fellas. I committed to 24 inch deep cabinets for 25.5 inch deep countertops.

I've owned the Ridgid planer, and it was pretty good, but I'm not sure that a Byrd Shelix head is available for it. Can we get Metabo planers in the states?

Don't know but the metabo thicknesser is good it has some power! I have been using it today it's a joy to use!

Have you used a DW735? It has a good blower, which makes it a great match for a CT with a Long-Life bag. I don't have any problems with mine but I haven't used the Metabo. I'm curious how they compare.

I also don't have the Shelix and I think that if I did, it would be dramatically better. I'm not a fan of DW but that planer goes through hard maple with relative ease.

Tom, I'm getting geared up to deal with a lot of quarter-sawn red oak with the Shelix, and I do not want to get stuck monkeying around with tearout. I'll post something about it on here when the time comes.

No I have not,  but from experience with many of their tools I have found they don't live up to their high watts claim they often seem to have.    I was looking at dewalt, makita, metabo  and reading around researching decided on the metabo and I was not disappointed.

I dont know if you know me by now but I am a picky person and have high expectations and always want the best. So deciding on a portable planer finding out which is the best was difficult as it's a tool many people don't have.  I only know one carpenter who has a portable  thicknesser it's an Axminster one! Oh dear! What a pile of crap!

I'm glad I got metabo one I does have good blower well it all flys out the port  any way not connected my CT to it yet.

I can do a video demo this weekend. If you like!

Once you're up and running, I'd like to hear your thoughts about the Byrd head. I just realized that they're available for this planer (I have the same one). Factors such as cut quality, ease of installation, initial cost, and longevity of cutters would interest me - if you have time. Thanks in advance.

I installed one in my dewalt earlier in the summer.  Cut quality is excellent. I have run jatoba, interlocked cumaru and curly maple with no issues. I'll post some pics. I cannot speak of longevity at this point.  The planer sounds quiter, but I'm thinking on disabling the blower for even quieter operation. Installation was easy. 30-40 mins max. The only issue was the snap ring for the head was jammed, but I was able to remove it.  Use the instructions on byrds website.

Just my opinion, but I've never liked any of DeWalts products as far back as I can remember from the time B&D first started the line, however that DW planer is excellent and I own one.  I replaced my Delta 22-580 with it.

At the risk of starting another conflict re FWW; the same issue with the vacs, Tools and Shops Annual Issue, has some information re different type planer heads, replacements instructions, costs etc.  (disclaimer;  [tongue] like any review, they need to be taken at face value and for information purposes only. The final purchase decision is a judgment call and up to the individual person making the purchase and their specific needs/uses.  For myself, though I read a lot of the industry periodicals, I've found this forum of actual users and it's sense of community with no hidden agenda's to be the best source for me.

On the lighter side, an added benefit is I'm also learning a new language, some one else referred to it as JMB speak.   [poke]  [thumbs up]

I think we all enjoy your videos...

I was serious about wanting to see how the Metabo performs. I am not at all comfortable saying anything positive about "DW" anything, but this 735 is not too bad. (I got mine at a fire sale...)

Sounds like you have decided on the DeWalt, but if you are not the Steel City has a cutter similar to the Byrd and has done well for me with Brazilian Cherry/Jotoba which is a very hard wood that is difficult to plane.

My Festool dealer has the Steel City model down there, and it doesn't look bad. He told me that it's spiral, but not helical. I'm not sure if I'm using all these terms correctly. I also think he said that the Steel City has HSS knives, and the Byrd is spiral/helical and has carbide knives.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has used the Steel City planer. How does the finish compare to the 735 with standard factory HSS blades?

Metabo

I think it has enough blow out??

Its a little bit of a poor video though cus I had just planned some MDF and their was some MDF shaving strips stuck inside just couldnt be bothered yet to clear it out.   Just seems to be MDF which gets stuck inside normal wood shavings come out flying.

I've had a 735 for about 3 years and I have learned not to put anything much wider than 8" through it or it will bog down and even trip my dedicated breaker!  I have to take very light passes on wider boards and it takes forever.  I agree it's under powered.  It's also extremely loud.  I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a hammer A3-31 which will solve a host of problems.
