Whenever I'm not using the board thickness gauge but the pointer gauge (not often, e.g. when using the machine on thinner boards), if possible, I try to keep the fence height setting on the machine unchanged until everything is milled and checked or dry fit. This is a habit I keep for critical settings when using other machines as well such as the table saw fence, router fence and drill press press/depth gauge.
 
I found someone on Etsy selling a custom 3D printed depth gauge for the DF-500 that includes stops at 12-15-18-19-22-25mm. Really handy for centering a domino on sheet goods and 1x stock.
