Hey all - I started on 14' of built ins for our dining room. 5 base cabinets, 2 uppers. Pre-finished maple for bottom, Garnica Pluma-Ply Combi-Core to be sprayed for the uppers. I'll farm out the doors/drawers/end panels to save time. Base cabinets are 768 (~30" tall). I had the plywood delivered a week ago and have made good progress juggling work and family obligations. I'm just going to photo dump on this one rather than explain everything. .

Looks like a cabinet factory!  Was not aware of the Blum tools for designing and I guess giving you cutlists.

Is that a free offering?  And how do you like it so far?

Thanks Neil. Blum has had this service available to Europe and abroad for years but only recently allowed USA to use it without a VPN service. It's fantastic. I have nothing bad to say about it. You enter all the critical measurements and it just spits out a 3D CAD model that you can import into SketchUp. It's a huuuuuge time saver for me. If you need to tweak dimensions, and I often do, it's really fast to do so. Yes it's free.

Very nice. Batch processing a bunch of parts that are all the same really speeds things up, doesn't it.
How are you edging these parts? What about the doors? Hardwood rails and styles with veneered panels?
Painted?

I'm edging with fastcap fastedge. It's working out nicely so far. I've used it in the past. Doors I'm going to farm out. But yes they'll likely be shaker maple frame, MDF center, sprayed.

No domino used here. .just clamp to the MTR-18 triangle, shoot a few 1 1/4" 18ga staples, drill, and screw:

Matt, sounds similar to Bent's assembly methods shown around the 8 minute mark here?

I've overcomplicated assembly in the past and thoroughly frustrated myself. Haven't had an opportunity to use this approach but it seems pretty foolproof.

Regarding the Blum configurator, did that port to Sketchup or vice versa? Or did you need to replicate the design in each program?

Great looking project.

Richard, yes similar. I got the idea originally from Greg Paolini:

I've always used Domino for cabinet assembly and I really didn't want to this go around. It's a waste of time and can actually lead to problems if you miss one of the mortises. I'm pretty careful with the Domino. I go slow, triple check everything, and when I use it for cabinets inevitably the edge bandings don't meet up perfect to me when I go to assemble. With the staple gun I can put my finger there and feel for flush then I know it's good.

The one issue I had was one of the bottoms wasn't flat and as I was stapling it to the side the front was flush to the side but the back end was off 1/8" because I didn't think to press down on the bottom or check it as I went. The staple was already in and I couldn't get it out. So I snipped it and used a parallel clamp in spreader mode to get it back near flush and drove the screw in. Growing pain with the process now I have it down and check for things like that as I go.

The Blum configurator spits out a cad file that can go right into SketchUp. It's a massive time saver for me. Before this I was drawing each panel as a component and grouping stuff together and wasting way too much time when I needed to change dimensions. I reference the Blum cutlist and enter those panel dimensions into Cutlist optimizer for all my parts.

Similar to my experience, and IMO fasteners used for cabinet box construction experience the most stress prior to being installed. Once secured together and to the wall I can't see typical use putting enough stress on the fasteners to make them fail, staples by themselves being the obvious exception.

That's a great workflow and reversed from how I think about cabinet design. I've used your earlier workflow before, design visually then try to transition over to panels/cut lists. PITA

The opencutlist plugin for Sketchup might be of interest to you. Once everything is in sketchup you apply a material to the components and from there the plugin will create panel layouts and schedules. Works great and recently updated to include SVG tools for Shaper Origin and other CAD/CAM. Open source to boot.

Thank Matt.

I used the 32mm holes to install Blum under mounts then clamped my stretchers to those before stapling and screwing. So easy.

Got the cabinets secured to the walls. .checked for level and plumb every which way I know how and they're within my comfort zone. You may notice some odd things inside the cabinet boxes at the bottom. I'll give a hint. . Next up is running new baseboard around the room.

Looks like you are using the laser to locate the outlet cutout?  That's a neat trick if I'm following your images correctly!

You got it neil.  [wink]

(Hopefully this video link works). I came up with this idea to install something to nail into after setting the cabinets that would be sturdy for attaching trim/baseboard. It's pretty rock solid individually and especially when you have 5 of them.

Plan is to have the baseboard a hair over the edgebanding but I spot primed the edge of the nailer just in case.

It's coming along great. Are you doing the same thing for the fillers? You could put the access hole in the back.

Dang it Matt, I'm trying to get rid of great tools I really don't need... then you have to go and show the Zeta?

That's gonna haunt me for a few days. Great looking project.

I'm sorry Richard. If it makes it easier I do not use it except when building cabinets. I tried selling it last year. Couldn't find the right buyer. When I assemble the uppers I'm going to use it for dry fit to take measurements for doors and drawers. Material is combi core that I need to paint and I don't want that process to hold me back from ordering the doors and drawers. So I'll clamex  it for measurements then break it down to spray.

That laser trick for the out let’s is awesome ,
I’m going to use that one for sure.

I also am lusting over the Lamell Zeta ,I’m seeing a lot of creative uses for it.
