Disturbing discovery (maybe)...

Last night I noticed in the 2014 catalog (p. 156) that only Granat and Rubin 2 are mentioned in detail.  At the bottom of the page there's the note, "For a complete listing of abrasives: Including Saphir, Brilliant 2, Titan 2, Platin 2, Vlies and Diamant—plus additional pack quantities for Rubin 2 and Granat, please visit www.festoolusa.com/abrasives."  Does this mean that these other abrasives will be in shorter supply from dealers in the future?  This question arose from a familiarization class I took last night at a local Woodcraft.  I mentioned using Platin to get a high finish on a varnished surface and the instructor hadn't heard of Platin, and when he grabbed the catalog, we discovered that there was only the briefest of mention about it in the new catalog.  Seems to me that the lack of access to the information is an automatic sales limiter.  Clarity would be appreciated.

I think that Shane might be traveling today and away from the forum.  I did get in touch with Festool USA before posting this.  The Granat and the Rubin 2 are the most common and that is why they are the ones listed.  The others are still being carried.  They were just trying to condense the listings in the catalog a little which is why they put the reference to checking out the website for the others there.

Peter, you may remember that last year the table widener for the OF 1010 went into a NAINA state, and it was right about the time I was looking for one.  Since I use Platin pretty regularly to resurface solid surface countertops and polycarbonate headlights and to buff out varnished surfaces, I don't want to be caught in a similar unavailability situation.  A definitive response from Festool will give me direction on how to proceed as to stocking up or finding an alternative.  I'm sure you'll understand this one.

That is why I called Festool and asked Brent just before I posted.  I am sure that Shane will also answer in when he is able, but it might be a day or so.

My Woodcraft dealer mentioned the same thing when the new catalogs came out.  Seems odd to omit most of the abrasives to save a page or two.

Been on a plane all day and boarding another now.

In short, the intention was to make abrasives simpler inthe catalog. Rubin and Granat cover more than 90% of applications. No changes to abrasives availability.
