DIY Overhead Garage Doors?

I did a search of the FOG but it only returned 2 threads, one of which was from 2009 and has a dead link. I will search google, of course, but I'd rather hear from you guys....

I am thinking of building my own Overhead Garage Doors, as I have more time than money. They would be 'oversize' 2-car - at least 18' wide by 8' high. I'd probably go with a variation of a torsion box design so they could be strong but also insulated.

I have a friend who does sells and installs garage doors, so I can get any hardware I need from him. He can also do the dangerous part with the springs.

Has anybody already done this? Ideas? Advice?

Your best bet would be to put a wood facade on insulated garage door panels.

Gary Katz wrote an excellent article on doing this for his new shop.

You can probably find it at one of the websites listed below.  He also writes for Fine Homebuilding but I think I saw this one in JLC.

I'm going to pick up a Domino XL during the sale to use on a carriage door build. Not exactly the same thing, but I'm interested in the layers that are being used these days.
