Do the new Sys3 rails support the systainer so that the lid can be opened?

I'm forever waffling on building my own Sysport as I have a mix of old systainers, some T-locs and a few newer M style systainers. I've toyed with upgrading all my systainers to the M style so that I an use the new plastic supports but they don't appear to be able to support the box to access the tool.

The easiest is to just buy the pre-made sys drawers but shipping to Hawaii is crazy expensive not to mention just expensive. Making my own is the cheapest way to go but plywood has also gotten expensive.

Any advice? Thanks!

To have an answer that a search engine can find later, no, the Sys3 rails do not allow the Systainer to pull out far enough to open the lid.  3rd party 3D printed versions of the rails appear to offer some sort of slotted hole that allows the rail to slide out once the Systainer reaches the end of travel, adding the extra length you would need to open the lid.

As building a workstation per se.. the price with reasonably good plywood and full extension drawer slides may very well match or even succeed the price of the SYS-AZ - if you need locks, then the SYS-AZ is perfect. And you save A LOT of time.

I found full extension slides that had a very good price, but they are heavy, have a push to unlock function - on top they are meant for heavy drawers, so it only works well with the heaviest systainers.. so I’m using Blum type simple but good roller sliders, with added depth needed though.
And I’ll add SYS-AZ for the rest of the builds  [smile]

I built all mine out of Melamine; not sure how available/expensive that is on the islands? It's relatively cheap here. I made the casements and the drawer out of it; routed our grooves for systainer feed with a template, and i have them two systainers deep. I've got some with multiple heavy systainers and not a problem. WAYYYYYY cheaper than buying the already made ones, and i make them two deep, AND i'm working on some for the L systainers and the XXL systainers.

Disclosure; I have a conturo and mfk700, so edgebanding all the Melamine for me is lickity split; that would be a factor to consider. I also used the LR32 system and the Domino 500 connectors for them, so if I move, I can take them with me.

Pardon the disaster/mess in the pics. Working on a renovation on part of the house and i just rip and tear tools out of there without any time to clean it up lately.

More likely is that their market research led them to the conclusion that their van-rack customers rarely accessed the contents of a box while still in the rack, thus there was little need to design the rails in such a way as to allow the lids to open.

Just a side note, I recently watched an interview with a Festool employee, that was held at a German trade show earlier this year. Festool did not attend the show with their own booth, but used a primarily online sale focussed dealer’s booth.

Every 2nd Festool tool sold these days ends up in the hands of a non-commercial/ hobbyist/ “private” user.

That is far from the same thing that Festool doesn't sell (in Europe).

It is far less expensive to build them yourself, unless you need locks. That complicates things quite a bit.
I made mine from melamine too, because it is readily available, but could be done with plywood too.
My pullouts are ply, with an Oak edge. The pullouts themselves are 20" deep, leaving space for storage of accessories or consumables behind them.

The exclusivity agreement between Festool and Bott means that they're not available directly in the UK and the Bott sight is effectively trade only (and also terrible). You REALLY won't like the Bott prices either.

The SYS-AZ drawers are now circa £200/set of 5 in the UK, so these rails are:

1. Relatively cheap and
2. Fast and easy.

The pricing allows for almost 12 (11.3) bays for the price of one SYS-AZ drawer pack and each have their strengths and weaknesses. AT £17.70 a pair, they're less than half the price of the Etsy offerings and only slightly more expensive than a cheap set of full extension drawer slides in the UK. I just wish we could get them at direct supply prices though...
