Do they test run Domino's at the factory before shipping?

Hi. bought a few tools to beat the price increase (6k...) and when I opened them up to have a look I found all of them to have that new tool look and smell....except my df500...there was actually a bit of sawdust (very little) in the case, and sawdust under the height adjustment guide, and dust stuck to any part of the domino that had a bit of grease on it. In addition there are quite a few scratches on the bottom of the plate. My dealer is a real good guy, so thought I'd ask here first if Festool actually runs and tests the tools at the factory, which would explain the odd things I found...before contacting him tomorrow to ask about this....
i realize tools get marks ect, and if it was on say one of the sanders I bought, no problem....the domino has multiple adjustments, and I just want to make sure I didn't get say a returned tool or demo by mistake...

I think I'd take it back. I have several Festools and haven't ever opened a new one where there have been scratches on the tool or dust in the systainer or on the tool. When you buy something new it should look new and I doubt Festool would want it any other way. Takes half the fun out of a new tool if it even looks like it might have been used.
 
Definitely not new. Everything I have bought has never been used or have any dust or scratches on it. I would take it back and ask for another one. You're paying to scuff it up yourself so might as well do it yourself. The tools are pretty bomb proof but still you're paying the money for it. Just my opinion

You mention there are scratches on the bottom plate, they usually ship with a protective film on there.

I'm with the other comments, send it back and ask for a new one on the basis that you simply don't know its history.
 
Yes, I will be calling him tomorrow about this and will return it as long as the oddities I found didn't come from factory testing (doesn't sound like it did)....I forgot to mention the plug it cord was not tie wrapped and looks like it's hit the floor a bit as well as it's not shiny new either.....

If it was a demo or return, I'm sure he gave it to me by mistake as he had to order me a vac and a kapex since I didn't want the floor models and that is all the inventory he had...I have to wait a month for these items....yeesh....lol

Oh well it will give me time to use my new sanders and lr32 system (and hopefully domino if he has another) while I wait for the kapex....and yes as a hobbyist, I take very good care of my tools..do they get scuffed and marked up a wee bit....yes but I would like to do that especially with the domino. I'm sure it will all work out fine, they have been very good to me over the past years.

Hmm just was made aware of another post while I was typing this.....film on the bottom plate....no film, just scratches....thanks all for the answers, like I said I'm sure it's a mix up with my dealer.

I just received 3 new tools and the boom arm set and had similiar but not the same concerns. Every box and package inside had been opened previously and parts of the boom arm had minor scratches on them. I was worried about missing parts because all of the packages of hardware and parts were open. I considered returning the boom arm because I keep my tools in very good condition and I like to be the one who scratches them. Well I did not feel like going through the hassle of returning the boom arm and I have already run it into table saw and other stuff by pulling on the hose so plenty of new scratches on it. Really no problem except I did not get them in perfect condition as others seem to.

At the price you pay for Festool goods, you have every right to anticipate getting products that are new and unused.  I'd raise a pretty big amount of noise if they didn't take it back at their expense and replace it with new and unused.  If they don't, be sure to identify the vendor here on the FOG so others can benefit from the knowledge. 

 
I don't know if they still do, but it was written here that at least at one time all Dominos were tested.  That doesn't explain what you have seen though.

I would prefer not to identify them because I did not give them a chance to make it right. Except for the boom arm everything else was in new condition besides being opened. These were the first Festools that I have had shipped and I presumed they were opened to check the condition before shipping.

 
I asked the exact same question when I got my domino and it looked like it had been used. Mine had a tiny amount of sawdust around the 5mm cutter (which came fitted).

Shane said that festool run them and calibrate them in the factory so that would explain it

I just played with my new domino this past weekend and wondered the same thing. It looked as if it had MDF shavings on the base of the cutter. My first thought was it was used, but it still had the film and everything looked new. I figured/hoped it was from the factory calibrating....thanks for confirming  [big grin]
 
UPDATE:

Spoke with my dealer today and he exchanged it no questions asked. When I asked him if he had looked at it first he said no it was brand new in the box.....he was trying to figure out what happened and also pointed out there was no manual in my first kit either....which I hadn't even noticed...lol
Anyway all went well and I was looked after very well and very promptly!!

To answer the original question, which is somewhat moot at this point, the Domino are tested at the factory. It's my understanding that they mark and keep each test mortise from each machine.
 
Ha, yeah, I guess that reads pretty funny.  [embarassed]

They keep the stock that has the mortise in it.  [wink]
