Does anyone still break abrasive packs into assortments?

Hi All,

I now have an RO 90 and a CT 26 after several years of dreaming but I also have the requirement that I repaint the trim and kitchen cabinets before my next Festool. The RO 90 is for the paint and stain removal but I'm lost when it comes to choosing the right grits for the job.

Does anyone still break the 50 and 100 packs into smaller quantities?
I'd like to test out an assortment to see what works before picking up a stack 50 to 100 high :) The stores near me stopped when there wasn't enough demand but hopefully someone knows of an online shop.

While you're hopefully still reading, any recommendation on grits / settings for taking off layers of old paint (mostly oil) over stained wood? I've seen videos of people using Granat 40 and 60 but I'm having a hard time understanding that option. 40 grit in my belt sander and I feel like I'm carving not sanding. Then again, the disk of Granat 80 which came with my RO 90 didn't reach bare wood after several passes so maybe I need to get over my fear of destroying the wife's cabinets.
In either case, looking forward to testing that dust collection :)

I am ordering Granat 40, 60, 80, 120, 220 plus some pads. Woodcrafter recommended the 120 and 220 but if 80 did not take off the paint I am somewhat doubting 120 will. Hopefully it will get here this weekend when my father is here to visit his granddaughter / and criticize my new "designer tool."

Thanks John, unfortunately it looks like ToolNut does not think my little old RO 90 is worth the time splitting packs into 10 :) I'm already eyeing the RO 150 for the doors (which I'm sure will be my next task once they no longer match the trim) but by then I hope I know what grits I need.

I have an order in to Bob's and am waiting for their quote for air delivery, after waiting years to buy a Festool waiting a few days for sandpaper feels excessive.

Just want to say this is not a Tool Nut decision, it's a Festool decision. [wink]

Festool doesn't offer the RO 90 Granat abrasives in smaller pack sizes. Hopefully they will add smaller pack sizes at some point. I think it's a gap that needs to be filled.

Hi Shane, I know and hope my flavor of sarcasm came across as joking not insulting. Once I get a feel for this new tool (toy) I am sure the larger packs will be more appropriate.
 
I sold my RO90 because of the way Festool makes RO90 abrasives available. Due to Festool's policy, for me, this sander is not economical in use.
 
  It wouldn't kill Festool to make available 10 packs of the round discs for the RO 90 down here we can only buy 50 or 100 packs, some of these 100 packs are $70. We can get 10 packs of the V93 triangle pads in limited grades.
What's also needed is mixed 10 packs, maybe a couple each in 5 different grades in say Granat and Brilliant to start with this would help enable users to experiment a lot more.
 
I would love if Festool abrasives were all sold in packs of 10 or similar. Some of them are available in smaller packs but the majority are only available in 50 or 100 packs. At least here in Australia anyway.

If there was somehow an assortment of abrasives available in different abrasives types and grits I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

 
Search for "assortment" at Festool Nirvana. They have assortments of Granat. I ordered the 150 assortment last month and they seem to be flexible on grits. They were out of one of the grits and gave me options to replace if I didn't want to wait for them to get it in stock.

 
I'm late to this discussion but  we do offer 10 packs of the abrasives. We currently offer 10 packs for the ROTEX 90 and all the 5" sanders and 6" sanders, as well as a assortment pack of Platin abrasives. By Friday - the latest, we will have 10 packs available for the RTS and DTS 400 sanders  as well as RS2E sander in the Rubin2 and Granat series.

We do not however offer assortment packs as my assortment recommendation may not be your assortment choice. You can pick and choose the abrasives that meet your needs  rather than a guess on my part as to what's appropriate for you.

But here's hoping that one day Festool will supply all the  abrasives in 10 packs.
Until then I have them if you want them.

You can also check with your local Woodcraft store. The local one here sells a sample box of 10 each of Granat 80, 120, 180 & 220 grit discs for the RO 90/125/150 sanders.

Depending on what you are sanding you may want to consider the Mirka Screens (Abranet and similar)
