Did anyone see the article on making drawers using rabbets and then dowel pins for strength and looks?  Hmmmm.  Looks suspiciously like a something right out of the  FOG school of design - the infamous Domidrawer!  The author should have at least given us some credit, sheesh...

I've used Miller stepped dowels in contrasting colors on drawers, very similar to the design in FWW you mentioned.

I have not tried Domino drawers.  I know with Miller dowels I get a very accurate hole with no tear out.  Not sure if the Domino would do as good a job as I have not tried it.

Would welcome hearing from others on whether they have seen excellent 'quality' results with Dominos for through pins on drawers as you mentioned.

thanks -

neil

How about some nice brass or stainless steel pins for the drawers rather than wood.

Perhaps some metal Dominos would be cool.  Or just fill the slot with low melting point metal perhaps for a different look too.

Best,
Todd

pinned rabbets - or variations there of - have been around a lot longer than Festool.

Don't kid yourself, the Domidrawer is not exactly a new joint.  It is just a variation of an old idea.

Of course it has.  It goes without saying Festool is not reinventing the wheel in this regard.  We Festoolians simply take pride in coming up with unique ways of using our tools that result in something different than everything else that is out there. Floating tenons have been around a long time too but having the domino makes the process a lot easier, faster and more accurate.  It should make a "Cool Tools" episode.

It did make the "Best Innovations" list of the past 25 years in Wood Magazine.

The first time I made a Domidrawer it was inspired by an article in FWW (not a Domino article) This is a recent one with square Macassar Ebony Domies in the rounded Domi mortise ;D Also has a Peruvian Walnut handle in Domi mortises

Chris, 10minutes in a clamp is all I need for some good grab, then I just move the clamps down the side enough to clear the Domi base. And with the Domi tenons, I use the 5mm bit at its maximum 20mm depth to plunge the mortise, then with the tenons, I scribe a line 2mm under that depth (18mm) then from the scribe line I round over the lower half to fit the mortise. When I tap them in, I always clamp the side with an F-Clamp to stop the drawer side splitting, and then when the tenon is fully inserted, the top 2mm that is square will press its self into the round side and square it all up.

Below is a drawer ready to be assembled. Note for the astute observer, yes the grain is going the wrong way (above pic)  ;D  but I figure with so many laminations movement will be minimal and 2.5mm both sides of the rebate have been left and a little foam just to stop the rattle.

I really like the look and the thought, Tezzer!

Did you decide to spin the drawer bottom 90 degrees when you were in glue-up or are they different drawers?

Tom

Tom, my bad. I accidentally cut the panel short. Spew. So I photographed it in the correct position and assembled it in the naughty position. ::)

Nice job as usual Tez.

I had a neighbor who saw some of my work on how I do all my drawers. He asked if I could make him a nice walnut desk with hutch.  I did all the domi drawers with ebony domis. I will see if I can get a hold of him and take some quick pics of them...
