I was installing the 500 connectors in 3/4” Baltic birch. I had the Domino 500 fence set at 10mm. I drilled out the 28mm mortise, attached the drill guide, and drilled the hole using the supplied drill bit and the same reference surface.

The drill came very close to broaching through the underside of the plywood!

I learned to drill the hole using the side opposite from the reference side. That way, there is more wood under the drill bit.
 
Yes it will be close. That's the reason I was careful to center the connectors. On ply that's .712" thick (18 mm) the hole depth is .634" when the connectors are centered in the ply.  So, there's only an .078" thick wall (2 mm) on the top side of the ply. 
 
I tried entering the mortise with the TSO plate on my 500. I found I got more wood under the drill by setting the fence at 10mm, flipping the board over, and drilling from there.
