Just got my new 700. I'm building a bed with 6 1/2" side rails. How many 14mm dominoes do I need to support the king sized mattress?

Thanks!

What species are you using?

If soft wood the glue takes more of the weight/stress than the mechanical connections because it forms a better bond, especially with modern cross linking PVA , therefore I'd just use two tenons.

If it's hardwood, I'd use three tenons as the glue doesn't penetrate as deeply, so you're more dependent on the mechanical connection via the tenons.

Also, what thickness are the rails? Generally the rule of thirds is relevant, therefore they should be at least 42mm to warrant using 14mm tenons.

Rails are cherry, 1 3/8 thick. Posts are 2 1/4". I understand the 1/3 rule but, since the load is vertical, across the grain of the domino, I thought 14mm would be best. I had planned on using 100mm dominoes, 70mm in the rail and 30mm in the post. The foot and head board rails will be glued but, the side rails will have both dominoes and a bed bolt. I had been thinking that 2 dominoes in each rail, offset for the bolts might work? I'd rather not drill a hole for the bolt through any dominoes.

Working between Imperial and Metric is a hassle are there any Imperial kits available for depth, etc?

Thanks!

Without seeing the design of the bed and what roll the siderails are actually playing its difficult to advise you. I made a kingsize bed frame for a customer and the side rails were basically for decoration with the understructure the actual load bearing part of the bed. Also in that design no glue was used just 10mm dominos and various mechanical fasteners.

It seems that the users are pointing you in the right direction here. I don't know what your timeline is with this, but you might want to postpone it for a few months if you're able to.  [wink]

Bed design is arts and crafts. Headbard and footboard will connnect to each side rail and will have a 1 X 1" strip fixed to the inside. 3/4 X 4 slats will be laid cross wise. I think that 2- 14 X 100 dominoes with the bed bolt wil be adequate. The design is similar to that shown in latest issue of Fine Woodworking magazine

Thanks!

So Tyler, is that a hint  [wink] that the knock down inserts for the 700 will soon be coming our way????

I have a systainer full of the secret Domino bits Tyler is hinting at. If you want some, PM me (doesn't have to be in a few months either ;)
