Domino assortment set worth it?

I am new to the DF500 having just purchased a used one.  Is the assortment set worth getting, or should I just get cutters as needed along with matching dominos?  Seems the most common used Dominos are the 5 and 6mm.  Or, at least it seem to be what I seen in a lot of videos. 

I plan to make a bath vanity and some cabinet doors at some point.

Do some calculations, and you may determine which is a cheaper way to meet your needs.

Good purchase on on the Domino. Assuming  you have a dust extractor I'd get what's needed for the task

at hand. 

I think the assortment set with Dominos and the systainer was worth it, It's nice to have options. 

Either way you're good to make things efficiently.

I bought the set and am glad I did. I’ve used all of the sizes for various projects and it’s really nice to have the systatiner to keep it all organized too.  AG first I thought about just getting the cutter / dominos for the material I use most but I soon realized I kept finding more uses for the domino than I originally envisioned so use it way more than I anticipated so quickly bought the assortment.

I got the set.  I am new to the Domino and wanted the entire set so I could try different things.  I did realize most of my work is in 3/4" plywood so I have recently ordered a bulk set of the 5 x 19 x 30mm dominos.

I bought the set and have used all sizes of tenons. I keep a couple of 4mm and 5mm cutters as spares. I’m extremely gentle when I plunge the cutter into the wood but have broken both size cutters.

I bought the set at the same time as buying the Domino DF500 and it was (and I think still is) worth every penny. I now have all the cutters that I need and the set has given me the chance to understand which dominos I need most yet still give the opportunity to use the full range when required. I would never have bought the 4 mm dominos nor the cutter but I do use them from time to time - like jointing 10 mm thick veneered MDF !

I bought the set and I'm glad.  Now I just replenish the dominos as I use them, but I like having them organized in one systainer.  I also make my own wider dominos, and I might buy another set just to have my custom sizes organized as well.  I've yet to break a cutter.

Thank you to you all for the comments, I guess I’ll be getting the set.  Truthfully, I was thinking about getting the set, but I was hoping some of you would say otherwise.  So, I could save a little money. LOL

I think you're making the right choice. I skipped the set when I bought my Domino. The second time I went to the store to buy a new cutter and a big box of one size, I saw the light and bought the set.

It's a little like taking off a band-aid, it's easier to get the pain over with all at once and quickly.

I too am a new Domino user having bought one last month, and bought the set along with it. I haven't used anything bigger than the 6mm dominos so far, but it's  been nice having the range available. My first "serious" project involved quite a lot of 1/2 material, so I got a lot of use of the 4mm cutter and dominos.

It's not a cheap machine, so you might as well make it as versatile as possible to start with. Getting the assortment along with integrated storage makes it all much easier to use and store, which for me in my limited space, has quite a lot of value in itself.

That said, when I get to where I want to use the connectors, I'll probably buy the jig and connectors ala carte.

I bought the set; for the cutters and the variety.  It is nice to be able to take advantage of the tool for different sizes, etc. without prior planning and ordering.  When I find that I am using a size regularly,  I end up buying the larger packs that have 6 bags of the size I want which are more economical per domino.

When the Domino is new in your shop, the assortment is a really good way to have what you need to get started, both in tooling and tenons, to find out what works best for you for the work that YOU do. From there, as has already been mentioned, you'll transition to buying in bulk for the size(s) you most commonly use for YOUR work. I bought all three assortments (plus the Seneca adapter) for my Domino 700XL and they have been very useful, even though I have transitioned to largely buying the long 750mm sticks of 10mm, 12mm and 14mm Domino stock that represent what I personally use the most in my projects and cut to the length I need for a specific project.

I bought the set when I got the 500, but when I bought the 700, I bought the long lengths so I could just cut what I needed when I needed.

I bought the 8mm cutter along with a bag on 8mm tenon plus the 8mm stock for my 700 domino.  I decided later to buy the Seneca adapter  and found a very good deal for a new 500 assortment (including cutters) for $250.  So far I've  used the 5mm cutter and tendons.

I have two DF-500’s and a DF-700 and bought the Domino assortment every time with each of the machines. The systainer keeps the domino’s safe and dry and is easy to work from.

Need something to store all the spare Domino’s in though  [doh]
