Is there a line or easy way to center a mortise perpendicular to the stock in an arbitrary position?

Example 1: mortise in a chair back where the arm(rest) would be received?
Example 2: Newel where a handrail would be received?

It will be for example 1, and 8mm x 50mm Dominos.  I have seen where people have laid down, say the shelf of a book shelf onto the side but I'm looking for something a little more calculating (and complicated)!

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Eric

Roseland nailed it.  If you know where the centerline of the domino's width is along the material, let's call it the X-axis, draw a line side-to side.  Then back the DF 500 off that line by exactly 10mm and plunge merrily away, but check your plunge depth FIRST to be sure that you're not going to plunge through the material.  A clamp-on straightedge is one good way to stabilize things.  You can also lay your level on its side and clamp it to the material.

I can't remember where I saw this, but you can use a 10mm domino to measure the 10mm offset.

I'm no domino expert. have only had mine a few weeks but I just clamped one of my guidrails across at 10mm above my line

And as sparktrcian said plunge merrily away

Photos to follow I hope
