Domino in action

Thanks Bill,

Now I'm really drooling.

Nice tip on setting the width of mortise while running.

Are you going to write a full review?

Looking forward to that,

Lucky T. Michael Ward

Bill,

I've been waiting to see your review of the Herr Doktors Fes"kewl" Dominator.  Loved the thought you put in the previous ones...

As much as I don't want too I will however have to wait until I try to open these videos...  my 26k dial up will just not due!!!

T. Michael,  Yes, a full review is coming.  I'm still photographing and playing but hope to put a cherry coffee table together using dominoes (20 floating tenons in the legs/stretchers) over the next couple of weeks.  I was never big on biscuits for table tops because for me, maybe I was sloppy, I always felt they hindered alignment rather than aided it.  The dominoes can be placed so precisely that I'm hoping they will not only add strength but align the panels for the glue-up....we'll see.

Jim, you just gotta find a girlfriend with a PC that lives closer :)

Bill - thanks for the videos & the comments - the statement above is really a clincher for me - biscuits are OK, but just not precise - looking forward to your more 'detailed' reviews - Dave

Unfortunately I can't play the videos on my MAC.  Are there any other MAC users in the group that know of a viewer for Bill's .wmv files.  I did check but Quicktime Pro can't import them.

I have a Mac and they play if you download Windows Media Player for Mac.

Here's a couple more vids to wet your appetite.  This is a preview of some of what will be in the review.

The first one is somewhat long and I've reduced the video quality to make it as small as I can but it's close to 6 megs.  I wanted you to appreciate the speed at which these mortises can be made...remember I'm virtually using the tool for the first time.  I did edit out some swearing in the middle of the video when I couldn't find the gauge block that was on the MFT right in plain sight :)

Leg and apron mortises

The next one shows the use of the Domino to edge join the boards.  Notice the amount of force I have to use to push the boards together.  An indication of the precise alignment (or misalignment if you're not careful) and strength that can be achieved.

panel construction

Once the picture taking was complete, I dont think it even took 5 minutes to mortise the other 2 stretchers and legs.

Bill,
Nice work!
On the second vid, were the domino's cut with zero clearence side to side?

Mirko

No, I used the middle setting (19mm+bit diameter).

When using the exact fit setting it's really and exact fit and easy to mess up.  I didn't think there was any need to worry about alignment in two axis when using the Domino to edge join.

Edit: I actually mentioned that in the video but cut it out in order to reduce the duration of the video...maybe I should have left it in.  Thanks Mirko

Thanks Bill for the great videos, but please stop. Now I may have to buy one it looks so easy and effective!

Gary

Bill,

Great job. Thanks to our new forum, you and others, have been able to enlighten us in ways not possible on the old forum. :)

Bill she not only sands teak in a bikini, but has sailed since she was 8 years old.  For now well worth the drive, eventually it will be a shorter commute...  ;)

Gary E & Cynric, "Thanks" the info for the Mac video players that will open Bill-e video's.

Actually, there's getting to be so many of us "Mac guys" that one of these days, the PC guys will be saying that.  My heart skipped a beat at airport security recently when three powerpcs in a row came out of the xray machine, each in its own bin, and the thought crossed my mind that I could end up in some other city with someone else's computer -- and as for mine . . . .
