Domino or Domino XL?

I have the original Domino, and think it is a great tool, and was considering whether it made sense to get the XL as well.  I am trying to see a scenario where strength would be an issue with the original used in most scenarios.  It seems to me that doing double domino's would provide a superior solution to a single domino from the XL.  My reasoning is that the glue surface would be increased if double tenons were used versus one large tenon.   Am I missing something here in terms of strength?

Can anyone identify a scenario where a larger tenon would be required?  I can't think of any.  Is the benefit just a reduction in joinery time?

I think your logic sound for small to moderate sized projects.  Of course there are certainly scenarios that could benefit from a large tenon, or multiple large tenons.  Think larger scale projects like a 8 foot entry door.

Depth is also greater with the XL.

Festool could have made the XL with less overlap in Domino range but it seems they've left a decent overlap so that the XL can cover medium to large tenons, with the original Domino covering small to medium.

I couldn't imagine trying to manoeuvre the XL to cut the smallest of tenons!

There's never a "need" for anything beyond a handsaw and a chisel ... but there's always a benefit to be considered.

Regarding strength and a little bit off topic, I was thinking how cool it would be if Festool introduced aluminium tenons ... I could also imagine some attractive exposed brass tenons ... or polished stainless on high end boat joinery (thinking through tenon treatments).

Alright I am interested...How would one use a Domino for joining decking?

I pondered this same question a few weeks ago...

I finally decided that most of my work is with 1/2" (12.5mm) to 1" (25mm) stock, which is ideal for the Domino 500.  I would have some uses for the 700, but I can always double stack the 10mm Dominoes if needed, which would be rare.

I finally ordered the 500 kit and finally got to use it a bit over the past couple days... I'm in LOVE!!!  I will order the 700 some day down the road, but the 500 will definitely suit most of my needs.  I made a few dozen Domino slots yesterday and I'm not sure I would have been able to find any sawdust on the table or floor.

As for FESTOOL, I am impatiently awaiting May 2nd, as I have the TS55REQ, MFT/3, FS3000 rail, ETS150/5 and the Workshop Cleaning Set being shipped on May 1st!!!  Using just the Domino 500 for a couple days has sold me on the company and I'm sitting here wondering how I can justify ordering the routers and Kapex when I have perfectly good Dewalt tools now (though every cloud of dust has me shaking my head and inching me closer).

Just for the record your honour, nobody here pushed this man over the edge and down the green slope - he stepped off and started sliding all by himself.  [eek] [big grin]

In my defense, it was more like someone flipped a lever and the ground dropped before me.... sending me quickly down the slippery green slope!

I know this is an old thread, but to the OP: you probably already know this, but Paul Marcel's videos at halfinchshy.com are an awesome resource for tuning your Domino as well!
