Hello,
I've working on a run of boxes using by DF500 and 4mm holes. I was using it for ~ 10 minutes straight (about 80 plunges). I turned it off to check the motor which was definitely warm. I have about 500 more mortises to cut and was wondering if anyone knows about safe motor runtime. I plan to take breaks but can handle about 10 minutes at a time.

Thanks!

A long time ago here was a suggestion that you don't turn it off between plunges.  The bit is totally retracted and your get less wear on the trigger mechanisms.  Just a thought for you.

You can run it as long as you need to.
The motor usually reaches a certain temperature and stays there  We have used the 500 for 1-1.5 hr  at a time with no issues on several occasions.
Most of the time i use it i don't even turn it off in between repositioning the work piece.

I've run the DF-500 for 8+ hours without shutting it off. It got warm but not uncomfortable.

Agreed I have the 700 and have run it for hours without powering the switch to the off position.

Is the heat actually from the motor or is it the gearbox? My gearbox warms up and it is no big deal. I have never noticed the motor casing get hot at all. I have done 30 minute non stop runs quite a few times and only noticed the gearbox warming up. There is no burning smell and no sign of lubricant leaking - as I said, it seems all quite normal to me.

i would think that the bit would create more heat then anything else on the machine.
Now this has me wondering.  I will be using it this evening so i will pay close attention to it.

I still agree with everyone that there is no limit to its runtime.
