Here's another tip picked up from End User Group Training:

In order to gain clearance when mortising on a bevel (a 45 degree in this case), ensure that you lock the angle of the fence before locking the height of the fence.

Photo #1 below is a wide shot of the area (red oval) for orientation purposes.

Photo #2 below is a magnified photo of the area.  This is the resulting fence position when the fence height is locked before the fence angle is locked.  Note the gap between the fence mechanism and the baseplate.

Photo #3 is a magnified photo of the same area.  This is the resulting fence position when the fence angle is locked before the fence height is locked.  Note the absence of the gap present in Photo #2 (above).

Photo #4 illustrates the resulting mortises cut with these fence positions.  The mortise cut with the fence in the lower position (left as you view it - Photo #3 above) is 2mm from the inside face, while the mortise cut with the fence in the higher position (right as you view it - Photo #2 above) is 6mm from the inside edge.

Photo #5 - Note that the mortise cut with the fence in the higher position (Photo #2) nearly went through the back side of the stock.  Only a skosh of stock remains, which is translucent (black oval).

Thanks for pointing that one out... It would be nice if we can have a separate area to put these tips and tricks into so we can quickly referr to them.

Shane what do you think?

Ruta, Just remember that if you actually went all the way through the stock, you meant to do that so you can see the domino and tell everyone it is a decorative joint.  Then you can use a sipo domino for contrasting colors.
