Domino Width Setting

I know I am supposed to have the Domino 500 running when I change the width setting. However, I occasionally forget and change the setting with the machine not running.

How damaging is this to the machine?

I've never changed the setting while cutting!

I actually asked Festool this very question a few weeks ago, I did it once (maybe twice) by accident and remembered just afterwards.  Here's what I was told:

"This is covered in the manual, but yes, you should only change the mortise width setting while the machine is running. This is because of gear alignment. Switching while the machine is off could break or damage the teeth on the gears."

If shift knob moved very smoothly the gears were all in alignment. You'll know when they are not if you try to shift it with the unit off, don't force it.

I've never felt any resistance. I'll try to be more careful in the future.

Interesting that my Domino XL manual doesn't seem to require that the machine be running to change width. Did I miss anything?
