Got my hands on one on Wednesday  ;D

As luck would have it, the Festool rep David McMillan (nice guy) was over here (Belfast) and had with him the XL.
Never even been switched on   So i wasn't long in getting it fired up
What a bit of kit  8)  plunges the full 70mm with ease, much smoother than the smaller 500. No dust worth talking about and nice clean holes. Although it looks big and bulky, its not, in fact it is easier to hold and work with.

A series of 3 METAL pins each side of the cutter for alignment, all working independently for different spacings, a double depth stop for different set ups with a click of the button. The fence has pre set angles now and allows up to 50mm depth from the reference surface.

All in all a really well engineered machine, much more refined than its smaller stablemate. The only downside that i can see is the fact it only does 8mm -14mm dominos. Meaning that one will still need the 500 if working with smaller stock.

I have made a few doors using the smaller dominos, which seem to to holding up well, so i shall be using the new XL for a lot of my work now as i can't see any problems with a series of 140mm x 14mm dominos for the joints.
The time saved, not to mention the timber saved, will be a real boon too. As my main business is making doors, windows and gates i ordered one straight away, i did ask David for his, but he has only just got it and couldn't let me have it  [crying] If you would like to know any details just ask.

Cheers.

Hi Belfast Bespoke. And welcome to the FOG!
Great to see another Norn Iron member.
I am originally from Tyrone.

I am thinking about buying the XL for door making also.

Good luck, Justin.

Welcome to the Fog Belfast.  I'm surprised your countryman Alan M hasn't been on to welcome you yet, he is usually the first with his banner  [big grin]

Got any pictures of your work ?

Woodguy.

[welcome]to the fog belfast bespoke.
great to see another from this island on here.
you should post some pics of your work

What a wonderful website!  I have to ask, were you or your brother a member here at some previous time and then deleted your account? Just curious.  While looking thru your website a great familiarity was forming.  The exterior decks especially.  Maybe many decks get built similarly there also.

Great stuff!

Peter

Nice work there Belfast.  Are you going to use the Domino XL on your external doors ?

Im sceptical, a mortice & tennon man myself  [big grin]

Thanks Peter,
No, Never been here before  :'( Seems like a friendly place.

Woodguy,
I'm a wedged mortice and tenon freak myself, properly made the joint is in effect a dovetail so is a mechanical fixing.
We have a door on the workshop made with dominos and it's holding up well with no visible signs of and weaknesses.
I am thinking along the lines of its a glue only joint, but when you do a dry fit it can be almost impossible to get the joint apart. So a good glue should suffice. A dowel could be placed each side of the joint through one of the dominos to give a mechanical fixing,as you would have 70mm depth each side, I think it would be a far better joint than the mass produced stub tenon doors.
Any other views would be welcome  ;D

Cheers.
