I have cut 10 x 50 mortises instead of 8 x 40, what a silly a** [mad]

Now I know I can glue in 10 x 50 domino to fix the problem, which will work fine on those cut on the tight setting. However the mortises cut on the mid & wide settings will have gaps. Will this weaken the joints where the new 8 x 40 mortises are cut?

I have only used the tight setting for the last three builds. Try it. If you're not comfortable with that, then you can cut 1or 2mm wide to each side by eye.

Turn the 10x50 on its edge. Trim to length to fit the longer mortices, glue in place, allow glue to cure, trim domino flush with surface.

A few choices come to mind, mill the same thickness as the domino and cut a homemade wide domino or split a few dominos and fit three pieces in the wide slot.

Better yet, glue in one domino held tight to one side of the too-large mortise.  When it's dry, flush-cut the portion sticking out and cut a new, tight mortise over the area with the remaining portion of the original mortise.  Glue in another domino the same way and flush-trim it.  When that has set up, cut a new mortise in the right place in the knowledge that it's being cut into solid material with no voids.

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys. I think that this one sounds the most secure so will try it.

I did the same thing.

I glued a domino in the mortise.

Cut it flush

added a stainable wood filler to the gaps.

You could also use cascamite mixed with wood dust of the same species of the base wood to fill the gaps.

Next time Im going to cut the domino so its under the surface of the mortise, then add filler/ cascamite
