Domiplate Order Thread

Well mine arrived in the UK on Friday.  Knobs are on order from Festool.....

Nice bit of kit, can wait to get stuck in with it.

Got my plate two and half days after ordering. I not sure what to be the most amaze by, the USPS being able to deliver a package in 2 days or the simplistic beauty of the plate. It make working with 3/4 and 1/2 inch material a breeze and add a lot of stability to the domino. I suspect Festool engineers had a meeting to find out who drop the ball on this for not thinking about it themselves. Imagine what they could charge by just adding a festool label to the plate [wink]

A meeting?  Not a chance.  This is an embarrassment.  The fact that we are doing this at all indicates that the stock fence has problems. 

People are paying extra money for an add on because they aren't getting the results they need with what came in the box.  I wouldn't have given this thread a second glance if I had been content with the way my fence was performing.  Nothing was broken, nothing was worn, it just didn't work quite as well as I would like.  So I noticed polarsea1's original post.  Brilliant.  I carried it a little further with the idea of the longer plate and the upside down concept.  Others contributed and Ron started fabricating them.  It's almost a cottage industry now.  But it all stems from the fact that we weren't getting quite what we needed from the Domino fence. 

No, this is a tricky thing for our pals at Festool.  What are they going to say?  "Yea, the fence has some shortcomings.  It's not as accurate as we'd like.  But here's a cool fix our customers came up with."  I don't know how you fit something like that into your marketing strategy. 

Notice also that this tread is 8 pages long and has hovered at the top of the Jigs and Tool Enhancements section for months.  During the course of the thread questions have arisen about Festool part numbers for knobs and such.  Stuff that could easily have been answered by a rep.  Yet there's not a single post in here with a green name on it.  And I can't say that I fault them, I'd stay away from it too if I were them.  "Fence problems?  What fence?  I don't see any fence."  Oh well, such is life in the manufacturer sponsored internet forum game.

Damn Shanno, goin' for the jugular!  What's got you so worked up tonight?  I think it's great that some guys like those on this forum come up with better ideas, improvements to tools and accessories.  Nobody said that Festool R&D was perfect.  Maybe it's in their best interest, whether for P.R. or legal reasons not to have any connection to Ron's item or Rick C's by commenting in an official capacity.  Off of here they might have gotten personal notes of appreciation, but it's not meant for anyone's eyes.  Just my opinion, but I wouldn't expect anything like what you're hoping for.  I hope that doesn't stop others from being creative with Festools.

I found this thread a month or so ago and figured I'd see if any changes or improvements to the idea had been made.  Funny thing is, I found the original post AFTER Ron had started working up his final product and I had actually created something like that made out of plywood for the exact same purpose with no prior knowledge of the going's on here.

Kindof like the invention of the photographic process - happened in two separate countries at very close to the same time.

Good job Ron!  (And kudos to the originator of the idea - great minds think alike.

Julian, I'm not sure I see it the same way as you.  I don't own one of these gadgets because my Domino fence works perfectly fine.  I'm sure there are plenty of other Domino owners that feel the same as I do.  I'm not trying to devalue your opinion, I'm just saying yours isn't the only view on this matter.

My fence works perfectly fine too.  But when I use the plate I get better results.  Give it a try and see if it isn't at least a little bit better.

The domino is a fantastic tool, but the plate is a great jig that amplifies its usefulness when working with plywood. You can see how many happy users there are of it on the FOG. Every woodworker knows that jigs are an essential part of the trade. I have several that have only one purpose. This is one more.

Yea, I'm yanking their chain a bit.  I think my $1000 sort of earned me the right though.  Besides, it's just bluster, they have me hooked and they know it.

If you remove the bit and shove an unsharpened pencil in their with the eraser end sticking out, turn it on and it makes quick work removing pencil marks.  [big grin]

finally was able to put the unit to test yesterday.  Very handy in quickly joining 1/2" baltic birch.  I haven't worked with the 3/4" stock yet, but I'm sure results will be similar.  This makes the work quick and no need to add spacers to fence, just screw it in and go!  Big kudos from me! 

Now what's this other Domino gadget you're workin' on....

My Domino originally had the creeping fence disease - ruined several pieces of nice hardwood (moved a few thousands on every cut). Sent it for service and it seems to hold but always wondering in the back of my mind if the fence is holding tight. Then I saw the domiplate and couldn't resist this tool. I use the Domino more often with 100% confidence. I can concentrate on the plunge and not watch for a slipping fence. Maybe this has been discussed before but why are the vertical fence height stops place on the unloaded side of the sliding fence? If the stops were on top there would be no need for this aux. plate.

Yep, It's a very small world.  I've been to Seneca Hardwoods many, many times, the owner was a high school classmate.  Have you been to their new place just off of I-80 near Emlenton?  It's worth the trip just to see the building inside (lots of old barn beams, etc.)  They have a large number of craftsmen's furniture on display there.

Another classmate set-up the Foxburg winery and developed all of the wines -- He has promised to get me into (good) wine making this summer.

Please let me know how you like your Domino plate.

Hi Ron,

NO kidding,  I'l have to take a ride up to see the new digs in Emlenton.  Now that's different than than the guys in town that sale lumber right.  What's the company's name????  I"ve been in there before also with the inlays in the floor and  the fireplace construction that is beautiful....  Where about is the new place????  Really like the Foxburg Inn and the new hotel there.  Sometimes the wife and I ride up on the BMW for a Sunday brunch......  That's just a nice area!    right alone the Allegheny right on the water....I was sitting at brunch one day looking out onto the water and a nice little yellow sea plane landed on the water,  taxied over to the hotel and he and his wife got out with there luggage and went inside.  Very cool.......Next time I'm in your area I'll drop you a line.  Possibly we can hook up....I'll let  you know about the plate.  I"m in the middle of some large glue ups and the shop is a mess ..

I received my Domino gadget (base plate?) a few days ago and have been making domino dust with it ever since.  I works exactly as described and makes the Domino joiner even better.  Thanks Ron,
