The recent discussion of Domino Dadoes (SP?) inspired an idea that the keywords Dovetailed Dominoes imply (at least to me). I'm curious what those keywords might imply to others so I'm going to delay describing my idea until tonight.

I wonder how many will come up with the same idea and who will have an even better idea.

What does Dovetailed Domino, or Dominoed Dovetail mean to you?

This is one that i done some months back.

Pic - 1 number 1 Shows 2 Domino cuts, the first on top is using the 10mm cutter on the smallest lateral setting and the 15mm plunge depth (the thickness of the drawer side)
Using the index pin on the left, right and a measured mark in the center plunge the cuts with the machine on the top and plunging into the end grain.

Swap then for the 5mm cutter and keep the same settings, drop the depth down so the cut just shaves of the bottom of the board and plunge again.

This is always the time consumming bit with hand cut dovetails getting that waste out. This method dose it in a few minutes and leaves a perfectly flat bottom and back.

Pic 1 number 2 and 3 shows the quick clean up with a chisel.

Pic 2 compilation shows marking the dovetails using a violin makers knife, then cutting the waste on the band saw, (clean up with chisel not shown) then glue/tap in and final fit.

Nothing flash, but neat, strong and very, very quick.

Ya gosta love the Domi ;D

And this isnt a "Dovetail" but its a sort of Keyed Domi join. I was going to angle like a keyed dovetail but never got round to it.

Pic- 1. Start with a mitered join, and use the indexing pin to space your plunges.

Pic- 2 Now children, join the dots ;D

Pic-3 My little jig. The distance  of the support plate fits snug between the pins.

Pic- 4 Shows Domi in place and ready to do her stuff ;)

Maybe I should add that my idea does include using a router and dovetail router bit as well as the Domino and 'oes

I agree - Domino keyed mitre or even butted corner joint is simple and virtually impossible to take apart.

Tezzer,

Just looking at the pattern in pic #2 (now children, join the dots)....Are you sure you didn't work on ancient Phoenician and Egyptian warships? ;D ;D
Incidentally, you'll notice how much I love the join the dots game by noting that "The Scanner" in my avatar is a mess of dots just waiting to be joined. :o

Regards,

Rob.

Just wondering Lignum , were you got that idea from?  I've got a feeling I've seen it before.
