Basically I need a shop that looks like a 2 car garage on the outside but has 3000 to 4000 square feet in the inside. Any suggestions?

I want to add a 20 inch planer. I have figured out how to fit it into the shop. Now I just have to find the extra space needed to actually use it.  [crying]

A 15 inch planer while smaller is not “orders of magnitude” smaller and only gains a little bit more space.

Oh well

Ron

I think I may have a plan of attack. It involves replacing a 36 inch deep cabinet with an 18 or 24 inch deep one and reducing the aisle place in front of it. That will open up the aisle between the jointer and the table saw. allowing the the planer to roll out with enough space on the side for me to feed and retrieve.

Ron

"It's bigger on the inside..." I think we have all wished for that.

There is a useless closet in my shop... I frequently wish it was a portal into Woodcraft or even (heaven forbid) Home Depot...

No helpful advice but I hope you figure out how to get that 20" planer in there.

I'm surprised no one has said 'this thread is worthless without pics'. :)

If you posted pictures of your shop or a drawing, I bet there are some smart guys who'd have suggestions for you.
Personally, I have to visualize things.  And move stuff around, and again, and again.

If you haven't already purchased a 20" planer, have you thought of getting a combo unit?
The biggest size in the Euro combos is 16" - definitely not your 20", but you get flatten/thickness in that 16".
They are super handy for those who'd like to have all the toys and still save space.

Thanks but I already have a 9 foot long 16 inch Oliver jointer  [eek]

Can you set the planer up in line with doors / windows?  Open them to have extra in feed / out feed. Not great if it is raining or snowing but otherwise could be workable.

I have done this with my miter saw on jobsites quite often.

Here’s the current situation in the shop. I actually have enough room to get the planer in the shop.  What I don’t have is room to operate around it, like getting by the thing to catch the board coming out.  [crying]

I’m using a blueprint cabinet that I had for storage at one end of my working area. If I swap that out for an 18 inch bottom chest that frees up 18 inches.
I think I can move the jointer about a foot closer to the other edge, so that gives me 30 inches. I can probably squeeze out another 6-8 inches somewhere.

Oh well

Ron

I got rid of my big table saw and then put things like the planer, bandsaw and Kapex sation on industrial locking castors. I added a mobile bench as well and now my 2 car garage is doing a great job.

Here is the cleaning lady finishing for the day !

Ron, I usually don't mention to my daughter  anything I see or read on my favorite websites, but I did read your title and  first line to her and she immediately smiled and nodded  [big grin]

I never did figure out what was going on when she was watching Dr Who, but I did know about the phone booth LOL.

My smallish shop could use some Dr Who help, as well.

No boats sorry. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a 12 inch Oliver in Tulsa when I managed to come across the 16 with a 15hp rotary phase converter thrown in for only a bit more. Plus it was an hour closer.

Couldn’t pass it up.

But it does make my 20x20 shop a bit smaller.

Ron your shop is 20’ x 20’ I think you said so 400 sq. Mine is 14’ x 18’ so a fair bit smaller.

I’ve got a 54” table saw, 8” jointer, 15” planer, 14” bandsaw, 9’ mitre station, 2hp DC, pedestal drill and a 5’ x 2’ workbench in a workable configuration.

So with your bigger space I think you should be ok with the bigger machines.

The table saw (which is also the router table) is higher than the jointer so outfeed pieces can go over the jointer. I can rip max 6’ pieces across the table saw, longer pieces it’s the TS55. For cross cuts I can do 54” max as the planer is butted up hard against the TS. Anything more than about 36” I will use the mitre station which can go to 8’.

The jointer is on the back wall. With a sink and some systainer storage on the end walls the max length over the jointer is  7’.

The most constrained machine is the planer. If I rotate it diagonally on its castors the longest pieces I can get through it are 5’.

The bandsaw is by the entry door, so with the door open and the saw table higher than the systainer storage I can get 8’ rips through it.

Hope that helps.

First impressions. Seems to be a solid machine.

The pallet was adequate. The crate was made out of the world’s crappiest piece 1/4 inch ply. 2 of the sides were actually made out of about 3 strips scabbed together with horizontal strips on the back. BUT it did the job, made it the USA without being destroyed.

Have to get it together and wired up.
