Drill Press Dust Extraction

I'm working on installing a drill press table and I've been thinking about dust as I've got a small shop. I see that Rockler and Lee Valley have a drill press fence that has integrated dust collection. Are these any good? Worth the money? The alternative seems to be some custom or home/made setup. If you've gone that route what lessons learned can you share? Are you happy with your setup?

I'm particularly fond of the Loc-Line Vac kits. I think to be most effective the extraction has to be as close to source as possible. The Loc-line stuff is easily adjustable for position and the height of the work piece.

I have a setup similar to Ron's. I can extend the hose or shorten the hose to get the nozzle as close to the work piece as possible.

I initially tried using a built-in port in the fence, but because I frequently machine metal items the nozzle really needs to be very close to the item I'm working on.

The bracket's made from 18 mm Baltic birch and it's held in place with 2 Mag Switches.

With a drill press you will find that the chip flow varies depending on the type of bit and workpiece.  Forstners, twist drills, holesaws, etc all have different patterns for where they throw chips so having a close coupled vac inlet that you can easily position is key.

I have the Drill-nado. Looked like a gimmick, but got it years ago after their kickstarter. Works well, and since they have gone to a clear shroud. They'll send the upgrade to you if you have the original.

I have the drillnado but it couldn't be fitted onto my bench drill press. It was 2 years ago...I will have to find time to see if I could install it. I bought it after a woodworking friend used it, and that was before I saw this review:

So I have had no actual experience with the gadget.

I have the Lee Valley drill press table but used the dust port on my bandsaw instead, because to use it, the two side fences need to be set apart. I prefer the fence to be closed like in one piece:https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/158322

I’m pretty simple minded. I just clamp the workpiece, hold the shop vac hose next to the drill bit, and drill away. This gets most of the debris. I can immediately see which way the debris is going and move the nozzle appropriately.

I am planning to attached a loc-line hose

directly to a Festool mini dust extractor to use in dentistry to reduce extra oral aerosol. 

The loc-line will need to come off the Festool machine directly without going through the included hose.

Can anyone tell me what I need to get to accomplish this?  Thank you.

Similar to how the loc-line comes off a shop vacuum directly but I was told by a Festool dealer that the measurements are in metrics so he doesn't know which attachment can connect the two.

It fits directly into a Festool vac or any other standard shop vac. The loc-line modules then snap into the end of the adapter.

This loc line one looks great! I think I need this for the drill press and maybe another for the bandsaw, when sanding on the lathe.....lots of possibilities.

The question is, what are you hooking the other end to? 4" DC hose or can the tool end of a Festool CT slide into it? I have a CT26 as a mobile vac in the shop to clean up my messes. Wouldn't be bad to just shove this in the end of the loc line as I need to. I can use the 4" big DC hose too if I have to. Does it work with a CT hose somehow?

You'll need a 50mm or 2 inch standard shop vacuum hose instead of the smaller 27mm or 36mm regular Festool hose.

The cool thing is, absolutely any shop vacuum hose will fit the Festool.

Outstanding quality hose and good fittings for less than $20. I wish they sold it a little longer, but that's a minor complaint.

If you want to connect to a DC line, Loc-Line has an adapter to go up to 3"...so you'll need another one to go from 3 to 4.

I only have one standard shop vac in the shop and it collects metal chips and doesn't move around. It's sitting under the metal lathe cabinet and can reach the metal mill and grinders so that's all I have for a standard shop vac. The rest is festool. Not a huge deal. I have at least one 2.5" to 4" adapter laying around the shop and a full size DC hose I take from machine to machine as I need it. I'll use that, should be fine.

Just to be clear, 2-1/2 shop vac hose will fit the Festool vac. You can use the Festool vac with Loc-Line, you just can't use the hose that came with it.
