ds 400 won't spin up to speed...

Was doing some sanding just now and the motor just slowed down to a crawl. Moving the speed dial up and down from 1 to 6 does nothing except modulate the speed a bit. I read that brushes go out at around 160 hours on these things and it's been put to probably around that many... is this just wear and tear?
