Dust Deputy issues

I just read a bulletin from Festool explicitly recommending against using the Dust Deputy with any Festool vac. I have one, and even with an added grounding wire am uncomfortable to continue using it.

From the bulletin:
"We strongly discourage the use of the Oneida Dust Deputy, or any other non-Festool product (unless otherwise stated) in conjunction with any and all Festool products. As a result, we ask our dealers to seriously consider the entire customer experience when marketing or selling items that could be viewed as add-ons to the Festool System.

Festool authorized dealers are asked not to display, advertise or promote the Dust Deputy as a suitable add-on to any of the Festool CT Dust Extractors."

Hmm, supposedly Oneida have fixed the problem on the latest version.  Wonder if Festool knows this?

Sounds like the lawyers talking, don't want any responsibility for a possible problem with a 3rd party product

Does anyone know if those "fixed!" claims are actually true?  I've looked around and seen reviews from several people who never had static issues in the first place, and ones from people who got and use what I'll call "transitional units"... but I haven't read anything from someone who normally has static issues and has tried to new unit as-is.

I'd love to know that before dropping the $250.  If it worked I would run out and get it, as I have used the rocker and oneida units in the past and loved them.  (But that was with machines and vacs that didn't have high end motor controllers)

FWIW, ever since I stopped using my Oneida and Laguna D-16(still for sale in the NYC area) I've been much happier!
I have more space, hook up is quick, the suction is better, no worries of static, and I don't have to ever deal with fine dust when dumping the secondary collector. Bags on the CT26 don't fill up that fast. Work-life is improved!

I have the Oneida UDD on my CT22 and I was getting static shocks until I did the upgrade and I don't have that issue any longer.

Upgrade meaning adding the foil and such, or just switching to the new hose and cyclone?

I am one of those who bought the deluxe dust deputy (not the model marketed for use with the Festool CT's) and I never had an issue with my CT-22.  When the new line of CT';s came out is when I noticed the complaints / issues with the static and damage to the CT's.  With Festool's warning I would take the money that you would spend on the Ultimate and buy a long life bag instead for when you are creating course dust or chips and use the standard bags when creating sanding dust.

I did the whole upgrade, foil and new hose.  I can't speak to what Peter is referring to since I only have a CT22.

I also have the UDD.  I must have the newer model as mine came with a length of metalic tape.  I have never had any problems with static.  With my old shop vac my hose would constantly collect sawdust along the length of the hose; standing it on end with a static charge.  With the UDD and the metalic tape I never get any dust sticking to my Festool hose.

With the UDD, the vast majority of dust never reaches my CT Mini.  I have a couple of reusable filter bags from matmax in England.  I keep waiting to fill up my current bag so I can try them out.  It may be a while.

The UDD simply works great for me.  [big grin]

Hope this helps

I agree, I will probably never purchase another Festool bag since they stay clean except for the very finest dust.

Is there an issue with the Dust Deputy or the Ultimate Dust Deputy?  I've had the DD practically since it came out and have never had issues.  I have heard several things about the UDD.  I think when I got my DD it was only $40 with no hoses etc.  But I already had the boom arm so didn't need the hoses and only needed a couple 5 gallon buckets and a lid to attach to.  $250 is too much for something easily fabricated... At least to me it is.

I think their concern is the UDD. I have an older model, maybe one revision from the original, and added my own grounding wire to bypass the hoses, but am still uncertain if my vac is at risk from static. Obviously, there have been problems, or Festool would not have issued the bulletin.

There have posts here about damage to the controller boards in the CT's.  Here is one thread:  http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tool-problems/toasted-ct22-motor-module-(thanks-to-dust-deputy)-!/60/

Yea that's actually my thread. Oneida paid to replace the parts on my CT22 and sent an upgrade kit with the foil.  I really did not like it but did the same thing they recommended electrically but with better components.

Oneida has since replaced the cyclone with a black anti-static unit which I have as well.

I REALLY like my UDD and wouldnt be without it. With grounding it cant be beat.

Oneida sent me the grounding package, did you have to purchase the "black anti-static unit"?

Jack

I did not. I don't know if they upgrade them for free or not. I am a partner in Workshopaddict.com and they might have considered me a potential squeeky wheel as we do tool reviews  [crying]

As you can see mine is black.
