Dust Deputy issues

I have a  - gasp! - Porter Cable drywall sander that I plan to use with my CT. Do they (Oneida) recommend it for drywall dust, or am I gong to be disappointed if I spend the money? I'd really like to keep my filter or bag clean and let the UDD get the brunt of the mess.

I have not used it with a sander but have sucked up a lot of dust (10 gallons worth) and it worked great.

Want to add that regardless of what happened Oneida was a standup company and will be my first choice for future dust collection.

I have done a boat load of sanding with my RO125 and CT22 w/UDD and it works great. No complaints.

I use a DD (the 5 gal bucket style) with a shop vac for sanding drywall with rigid RO sanders. I clean out the DD bucket when it gets to about 3 gallons and also pop open the shop vac at that time to see how its doing. There's nothing measurable in the bottom and some fine stuff on the HEPA filter that I bang a bit to clean. I also added a hepa bag to the shop vac and now the filter barely gets any dust at all. DD is amazing with drywall dust IMO and for their part the rigid sanders capture practically all the dust, just a few small bits hit the ground where I'm sanding.

When did this bulletin come out?
I've had my UDD for as long as Oneida has been selling them[got in on the earliest production] I've used it with my now gone CT-22 and my CT-36Auto.[ but not my CT-26, yet]
  No issues.. BUT, I use the AS 50mm Boom Arm Hose to connect the vac to the cyclone, not the white hose that Oneida sent with the kit. I also installed the copper tape inside the Cyclone a bit at the hose connections. I've never needed to 'CORWIN'ize it[  he went all out with the tape....  [wink]] but would do so if I needed to.

Oneida communicated with Festool during product development of the Ultimate Dust Deputy.  Festool evaluated the Dust Deputy and signed a written contract authorizing Oneida to sell the Ultimate Dust Deputy to their dealers and to direct customers. Festool said, “ we understand the dust deputy is customer driven” 

The Ultimate Dust Deputy is designed to maintain a continuous anti-static loop from tool to the grounding of the vacuum's inlet when used with anti-static tool hoses. All of the Oneida Ultimate Dust Deputy components are made with electrically conductive or dissipative materials. In our testing (and 3rd party testing), the Ultimate Dust Deputy does not add any impedance to the loop and maintains the anti-static pathway to earth ground on the Vacuum inlet.

Thanks for the input. This in combination with the OP info makes things clear as mud for us consumers lol. I wonder if Shane can clarify the Festool company position to help us out. Time to break out the.... [popcorn]

From my experience with Festool on this issue is they cant endorse or guarantee any product not manufactured by them.

Since anything that happens is out of their control, they are not going to stick their neck out. Can't blame them

Regardless,  if I bought a brand new CT tomorrow it would have a UDD on it.

First hand experience showed me Oneida was concerned, responded quickly and promised to rectify the issue. Which they did.

Can't ask for more than that but am betting regardless of what Oneida has done to the unit that Festool will change their stand.

If they believe that they have resolved all the issues with the UDD, perhaps Oneida should consider offering a FOG discount - say $199 for a limited time. Those who are on the fence about getting one can do so at a special price, making it more tolerable if there are issues that Oneida has yet to identify and resolve, and can report back on their experiences first hand.

A broader base of dedicated Festoolians ( Festooligans? commenting on their personal experiences wouldn't be all bad, would it?

I have the UDD and like it and have never felt any shock while using.  I will say that I do think I need to do the copper tape method a little bit better, what was supplied doesn't seem to hold well.  The other thing I question, is in all the literature it shows a black hose, mine is grey, does anyone know if this is a different hose now being supplied?

In the upgrade kit that was sent from Oneida, I have a black hose to replace my grey one.

Not speaking for Festool here but in looking at the report linked to in the Oneida thread I noticed that the date is May 15, 2014 - just 5 days ago.  I wonder what changes have been made to the UDD package since its introduction.  I would also venture a guess that the communications with Festool during development and subsequent permission to use the Festool name in the marketing did not place the onus of design engineering on the manufacturer of the product that previously existed.  The responsibility typically rests on the manufacturer of the secondary product.

What was in the upgrade kit and what did it cost? 

I've been very happy with my UDD and haven't seen any issues with static buildup on the hoses.  That being said if there is a better design at a reasonable upgrade cost I'm willing to make the change.

I'm glad you called before I could answer you, the Oneida people have been excellent in response to this issue.  I also have their V-3000 shop system and they were great helping me design my shop layout.

Thought I would add my experiences.
I've had a CT26E Dust extractor for about 3 years.  I also purchased a Dust Deputy designed for the CT26E HEPA at the same time and have used them together without a problem.  I am a DIY hack and work mostly in my basement which is damp in the warmer months. The CT was purchased primarily to allow me to scrub sand 30+ year old printed wall panel prior to painting.  The sander used was a RO90 DX. The job was in the first floor family room which I started shortly after the xmas holidays.  The house was very dry, so it would be easy to create static.
The wall panels were sanded, joints and nail holes spackled and sanded.  I feared doing this job.  Thinking I would create a heck of a dust mess throughout the house.  The DD was filled a few times with dust.  NO ISSUEs.  Wife was pleased during sanding, little dust or mess and the family room looks much better.  The job this dust extractor and sander allowed me to accomplished, sold me on Festool!  I’ve had no issues with tools shipments.  All have arrived quickly after ordering and in excellent condition.
So about a few months ago, I read about a problem, (possibly on FOG) with the DD and wondered why my dust extractor did not fail.  Was there really an issue with the DD.  I did contacted Oneida, completed a short survey and indicated I had no problem with static shock.  Oneida quickly sent me an upgrade for my original DD free of charge.    After looking at the box for a few months, I took the time yesterday to install it.  The new cyclone is antistatic as is the supplied hose.  I was able to connect the 2” hose ( top of cyclone to CT) without the need for the supplied elbow coupling with aluminum grounding tape. 
I must have been just lucky.  For when the original DD hose and elbows were examined, I found a film of dust clinging to the insides.  But the antistatic, Festool Hose used for connecting my tools to the DD was free of dust.  So, I am now a believer that there is a problem with the original DD hose and plastic fittings.
