Dust Extractor Hose Size - 27, 36 or 50mm?

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a CTM 26 dust extractor - mainly to use in my workshop with my sander and track saw. It comes with a 27mm hose but Im not sure whether to also order a 36mm or 50mm hose. Does anybody have experience or know which would be best in this case?

I have a CT36 with both the 27 and 36mm hoses.  The 36mm hose definitely works better with the tracksaw.  To save money, I got the non-antistatic version and although it does generate some static, it hasn't been a problem for me.  My shop is in the dry desert and I suspect the static generated here is likely worse than most places, but I see no need to change it.
 
I have all three size hoses but use my 36mm the most.  I only use the 27mm for my sanders and not even then on my in shop cutting/prep tables.  There I use the 36mm with the short 27mm adaptor hose that I bought from Bob Marino.
 
27mm will be fine for both.  You might get marginally better dust extraction on the TS using the 36, but I find the larger hose on the saw more of an impediment.  If you get larger machines though, like a router, Kapex or planer, the 36mm hjose will be necessary.

Keep in mind that if you want to use your CT for shop cleanup, you can always just plug in a regular 2 1/2" hose -- you don't have to buy the expensive 50mm for that task.
 
Great, thanks all! I think I'll go ahead and buy the 36mm to use with the track saw and the 27mm with the sander then for cleanup just use a regular vac hose that I already have.

Although... now I'm just looking into whether to attach a mini cyclone to save the filter bags and what connection hoses I will need for this!  ::)

Excellent plan for the hoses  [thumbs up]

Though the D27 does the job quite well on the track saw the D36 is a little bit better and if you get a router you will want the D36 for that. The D36 is also quite good for shop clean up.  But a 2 1/2" hose is better.

On the cyclone .... that can become a whole rigging issue. You might want to just go ahead and order without getting into that so that you can just get started on things. Add the cyclone later if you want it. The bags hold a lot of dust from sanders and the track saw. Unless you are doing a lot of work or using a router or planer with the CT the return on investment for the cyclone can be waaaaaaay down the road.

I have both the 27 and 36 mm hoses. I usually use the 27mm hose now because it is the hose that is hooked up and ready to go. With the track saw, there is a slight improvement. Other than that, I find no noticeable difference with sanders, routers, or the Domino. Plus, with these tools, the heavier duty hose gets in the way. I purchased the 27mm sleeved hose last year, which is tapered at the end. That is so great to use on all the tools that I just find it hard to use the 36mm hose even on the saw now. If you own the TS75 saw, I'd say the larger hose is a must for effective dust collection.

When I purchased my CT26, I also purchased the Installer Cleaning Set, which includes the 36mm hose.  I found the 36mm hose improved the suction while cleaning my basement (which it needed badly).  However, I have since added the 3.5 sleeved hose, which is what I have mounted on my boom arm, and is what gets attached to my sander.

Depending on the task, I can see a need for both sizes.  I can't comment on the non-static concept, as I know nothing about going that direction. 
 
The 27 mm hose gets the most use with my tools, but I wouldn't want to be without the 36 mm hose for clean up, the 27 is not that good with that.
 
Bigger chips can block the opening of the 27 hose easily, especially with the hybrid 27/36 connections.

The planer also does a wonderfull job of clogging up the opening of the 27 hose.

I bought my 36 hose as part of a set in a systainer, with the metal pipes etc. Current version with T-Loc would be 497701. It is the -AS hose. Although I have to admit I haven't seen much dust problems with the non-AS Precisio Y-hose either. But when it's warm enough to be in the garage... humidity tends to be high.
 
For extractors that have variable suction, I’d have thought the 36 mm hose might have been the better user focussed standard supply?

Personally I haven’t noticed bulk increase as mentioned by previous posters - but the improvement in dust collection is significant on the ts75 and 1400 router.

I thought the variable suction was only usefull with sanding tasks (and those are used with the 27mm hose), if a tool benefits from having the larger hose, I would think it's counterproductive to turn the suction down.

Indeed - my point is that if you have variable suction then why not supply the “more sucky” (!) hose as, if it’s too powerful for smaller tools, you can simply turn the power down. But you can’t turn the power up any further with a 27mm  Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
 
32mm hoses here.
As others have mentioned before, I find that a 27mm hose doesn't provide enough suction.
The 27mm inside the port connector constricts air flow too much in my opinion.

The 32mm hose has the same over the dust port connector like the 36mm hose.
So it's a nice compromise between ease of handling and collection performance.
If I need a 27mm connector, I use one of the 36mm -> 27mm adaptor fittings (mine are originally from ProTool)
