I'm trying to figure out how to handle the exhaust from my DW735 and one good option for routing the pipe would involve going up about 3' from an elbow at the planer then across about 4-6 feet of ceiling and then down do a trash can. I don't have a dust collector (and part of the rationale for the 735 was hoping to avoid committing the space to one). Anybody know if the fan in the 735 can handle that much lift?

thinking about this set up some more. It seems like a lot of trouble and expense for the benefit you'd get from your proposed set up.
Maybe consider getting one of those trash cans that can take the 4 wheel dolly.

Store it when not in use out of the way and then move it to the planer side when milling. Run a piece of flex hose to the can. the fitting to the planer for the hose is easy to get on and off.
You'll also probably need to make some kind of venting for the trash can because I believe the planer will blow the lid off a tightly closed can.

Just attach a cloth bag directly to it and forget about ducting and trash cans. Easier to store when not in use.Cheese said:

The reason I want to run the exhaust overhead is that when the planer is in use it is out in the middle of the (not large) shop and I'm hoping to get the hose and the chips out of my way. The direct connection to the bag is intriguing. Don't know if it would bug me having it right there at the outfeed or not. Sure would be simple.
How much wood can you remove before you need to empty one of those bags?

So someone could run this planer without a dust collector inside? Just to a bag or can? I want to start buying rough lumber flat one face, then mill with my track saw and a planer. Don't have space for jointer or table saw or large DC. Is this realistic?

With the Jet DC OFF, the chips travel through the ABS elbow and make a secondary turn, then drop 3' to the floor, travel along the floor for 4', travel vertical again for 3' over a box before dropping 3' vertical again, traveling on the floor for 2' and then finally rising up to attach to the Jet DC.
This gives you an idea as to how powerful the blower in the DW 735 is. And all of this is through flex hose. [eek]

The only issue is that the stock blades are relatively soft and wear quickly. They also can not be resharpened by design. So for large quantities of lumber you'll want to purchase carbide blades for around $250 or purchase a Shelix head that uses carbide inserts for around $450.
The nice thing about the Shelix setup, is that the carbide inserts have 4 cutting edges, so as they dull you can rotate a new edge into position. I'll also add that the Shelix head reduces the noise by about 10 db. That's huge. [smile]

I've been thinking about the Shelix for that reason alone – fewer blade changes and the long term savings would just be added benefits. Holding off for now while I see how much I use the planer and if it's a slippery slope and a jointer is the next rung in my descent.
Kind of want/wanted a combo machine, but space is tight and it would mean needing to add a dust collector before it was really usable...

So, based on that I would say yes, you can but with a reasonable hose length.
