My Plunge saw just stopped running while in the middle of a cut??? Been using Festool exclusively for few years now and this is a first. Can anyone please help. Busy late at night here and need to get job finished for tomorrow. NOT!!
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

its designed to stop running if you have been pushing the motor too hard.

no problem. the time you have spent typing here will give the motor time to cool down. i recommend trying the saw now. it should work fine. if not, try it in the morning. still not working, then call your festool dealer.

regards, justin.

Thanks Justin but had only made a few cuts. Motor still cold. Checked brushes but there still seems to be a lot of meat on them. No loose wires, tried different tools on same cord and they work, so there is power coming through! Man this is frustrating. To make matters worse, we have another public holiday tomorrow and I'm the only turkey working!
Appreciate your quick response.

Thanks for the welcome. Bought it in 2006. It has been dropped a few times but never so hard that there was even any damage to the casing. It's what I always liked about Festool. Tough tools to damage. At least in my experience.  I've opened her up and all seems well. The brushes do look good but I'm wondering if I shouldn't steal the brushes from one of my other Festools and see if that works?

Happy to report, that did the trick!! Go figure? I can see no physical reason why the existing brushed don't work. The little built-in safety pin has not come through any of the two brushes. Weird!
Well, at least I can now carry on getting my project finished for tomorrow. Oh, make that later today. I LIVE FOR THESE ALL NIGHTERS! - Not.
I'll take her in next week to the agents and report back if they have any comments.

What do these brushes look like, location, access, etc? Are they "off limits" to users, in context of service/warranty, etc? Can anyone point me to a pic? Always wondered whether a user can replace these "on site," should the need arise. [Being beyond buddy/warranty help out here.]

Hi Axeyard

They are located on the motor side of the saw under the cover where the Festool logo is.. Just remove the 4 screws and the cover pops off quite easily. They do use a star shaped screw head by there is a slot for a flat head screwdriver too.

If you now look inside, you will see what looks like a little brass boxes which hold the brushers. Just unscrew the small silver screws and pull them out. On the side with the pink connector wire, you will need to be carefull as there is little slack on the wire, so don't pull too hard on the crimp connector as you may pull it loose at its "other" end which is further inside the motor casing. ( has never happened to me, but you can never be too careful with any baby as precious as Festools)

Reverse action the new brushes in and presto, you're done. Quite safe and easy to do, even on-site.

As for warranties and the likes, I don't think it will be an issue, but please check with your dealer. Here in South Africa, the rules always seem different than the rest of the world. Not from Festools side. I think it's just an "African" thing.

Try doing it now before the need arrises if you spend a lot of time on site like I do. Nothing worse than a tool not working on site and then have to waste valuable time trying to figure out how to get it going again.

Good Luck

Thank you, Tigger, for your very helpful reply. Hearing about these brushes quite a bit in the literature, I've wondered whether they are something that Festool "allows" a regular-Joe user to order and install. I'll certainly be archiving your comments, thanks.

You're welcome. I must say they pretty cool in design too. One of the brushes has a small spring loaded pin inside it. When the brush wears down to a pre-determined point (where this tiny pin is enclosed) it pops out and pushes the remainder of the brush away from the armature preventing an over-worn brush from causing any damage. Very cool.

hi I have had this happen (not on a festool) the brush was stuck in its housing so the contact lessens as the brush wears until
the motor stops, try the defective brush in the in the machine you used for the replacement brush that may confirm the problem.
I love Cape Town I stay at green point just bellow signal hill.

I don't know when you were last here but that area has changed with the building of the new Soccer stadium for the world cup.
Cape Town is great but its just so expensive to live here for us locals.
When you coming back for a visit?

Hi I doubt I will ever return, but never say never.I saw paul simon at the green point stadium I guess thats where the new stadium is?

Yea, they pulled the old one down and built this huge monstrocity in its place. Changed the road system around it too. I also agree to never say never.
Well, when never happens, give us a shout and I'll hook you up.

Tigger,

Maybe one day I'll come visit my relatives on my Mom's side of the family who are in Cape Town, Pretoria, and Johannesburg.  My younger brother visited a few years ago on his honeymoon.  Before that we had only met one relative from S.A.

Andreas,

It was the brushes.  He tried some from another tool and it worked.
