Does anyone know why the EHL 65 was discontinued?   I was contemplating getting one...now, that I have a torn rotator cuff and an exacerbated carpal tunnel condition which makes hand planing difficult. Thanks.

No. 574549

$395.00

EHL 65 E Planer

This product has been discontinued with no replacement.

My experience is that Festool USA and TTS never discuss their business discussions in public.

If you want the EHL 65, chances are very good a dealer has a new one in stock and that used ones are available.

Festool also has a policy of providing spare parts for a minimum of 7 years after a product is discontinued.

Thanks, guys.
Isn't knowing why an item has been discontinued a reasonable request from a customer? I don't mean to pry into any of Festool's private business, but if the tool is discontinued because a new and better machine is soon to be released, would it not be a courtesy to inform customers. No?
When I buy a tool, I hope that it will last more than seven years. Being able to get parts for only seven years doesn't sound all that appealing to me.

I believe in another thread that Shane posted  that he wasn't aware of a replacement for the 65.  The policy is AT LEAST seven years.

Here in europe festool has updated the 65 and it now has a plug it lead,so I doubt it is going to be dropped anytime soon 4 a new offering.
for reasons best known to themselves fusa have decided not to offer the newer version.
best grab one off Tom while u can..

I was just at one of my local Festool pushers, erm dealers, and they offered me the 65 at a discount since its being discontinued. If you're getting one you might check to see if that's a possibility...;)

Why is this such a great planer ? Just wanting to learn.

Mike

It is a great planer because:

The spiral blade is quieter and decreases chance of chatter marks, it is light, can be connected easily to a vacuum and is versatile. Mine has been used in a range of tasks including panel flattening, back planning architraves and skirts, wall frame straightening, bevelling door edges and other edging work (particularly before I purchased a T55 REQ), and slightly resizing decking.

Also the blade is easy to replace, and you are replacing one, not two or three blades. The chip exhaust can also be easily switched from one side of the plane to the other.

Further comment.

The blade set up makes the dial depth scale very accurate. It is also good at rebates, but I prefer to use a router, and finally its a Festool.

I was wondering why you didn't return my email yesterday.  [scratch chin]  $290 was a good deal for a brand new one...wish I had the money last week...I was momentarily tapped from having just bought the CMS GE, Rotex 90DX, a four Whiteside bits.

Discontinued = Festool finally accepted that its one of the inferior tools in their line up.
Sorry, can't help it. I really dislike the 65. Went to go buy one a couple years ago and couldn't believe how inferior it was to my Bosch that had finally died.
Bought the 850 instead and love that planer. Ordered parts and fixed the Bosch.

Which Bosch is it? Yes, the 850 looks like the ticket.

I love my 850....it is so versatile and one awesome, awesome hand planer.  Cannot recommend it enough.

We should all make purchases based on our own needs and thoughts or reactions. Obviously if you purchased the larger 850, then the 65 was not for you.

As for the 65 being a inferior member of the Festool line up, I just cannot agree. And remember the rest of the world still has it! Festool USA reasons probably or likely  have more to do with the change to plug it and related probs with US or US state regulations.

Not sure why you think it's inferior. I've has 1 for years and it's a great planer. Much better that the bosch planers I have used. Light weight and can take a 4mm pass in oak.
