EHL planer problem

Hi,
I've just purchased the EHL 65 planer which is great apart from one problem.
When planing a door it leaves a ridge when starting but is perfect when coming off the end of the door. Has anyone else had this problem. I believe you can't adjust the blade position ?

Strangely I have not had this problem with doors in my limited experience but more recently I have been using a tracksaw.

However just this afternoon (AEST) it happened when back planing some skirting boards. I put this down to 'sloppy' technique, however like you I would be interested to know what I am doing different/what is the reason?

Hi,
The reason for this happening is that the blade is not exactly lined up with back main planer block. With an adjustable blade fitting you can set it up perfectly. So with the blade not being adjustable I'm puzzled on how to get it right. Being festool I didn't expect this to happen ?

Take the blade out and check for dust in the groove that the blade rest against

Cheers

Bryan

Hi,
I will do but this is a brand new tool on its first use. If it's all good then I'd better contact festool.

Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

Is the ridge perpendicular to the planing direction?  Your description sounds like what is commonly referred to as snipe. The front adjustable plate is higher (further above the work piece) than the back fixed plate according to the depth of cut. So when the planer enters the piece , only the front plate is referencing resulting in a little "bump up" when the rear plate comes onto the piece. On exit the front leaves the piece first  so no change in the cut occurs.

Hi Seth,
That's exactly what's happening, you description was better than mine.
I put a new set of blades in today but still the same.
I have adjusted previous planers to eliminate this as the finish needs to be good.
Any ideas ?

Robbie,
How far into the cut is the offending ridge occurring? Is it possible the parking stand is not fully retracting and causing the trailing end of the bed to lift?

Hi,
It's at the very start of the back planer body.
The only answer I can see to a perfect finish is to take off the main back bottom section and take a very small amount off the fixing blocks inside and refit so the blade lines up exactly to the back main body. This was easily carried out on planers with adjust blades.

Robbie,
I think I would either exchange it or let Festool service try to make an adjustment rather than risk voiding the warranty.

Using mine again today and decided to check. Depth at zero in these pictures and I did not have the issues of Monday.

I believe it is a technique issue.  When entering the cut you need to tilt the planer forward so that the blade doesn't get buried into the piece then as you exit you want to be tilting backwards for the same reason. Think of it as a balance thing, not necessarily picking up the back of the planer, just not putting pressure on it.

That is my experience planing with the 850, hopefully the same technique will work for you.

If in fact, the cutters are out of alignment with the rear shoe, and there is no adjustment for either, I can't see how it would ever work properly.  [2cents] [2cents]
