End-grain board - with plywood

Been meaning to make an end-grain board for a while now, but thought I would have a practice first on a scrap piece of 21mm birch ply.

Edged in oak, and oiled with burnt linseed.

Very cool. I wonder if the design could be adapted to make a chess board.... or, now that I think of it, it would make a very nice top for a side table or cabinet

As its plywood technically I'd call it 50/50 long grain and endgrain [wink]

I like how since you made the horizontal pieces slightly longer than the vertical ones, you end up creating a basket weave effect.

I wonder though, this is the first time I have ever seen an "end grain" style cutting board done with plywood, would there be any healthy safety issues with cutting on plywood being that there is glue in between all those layers? Im not thinking it'd be safe to cut food on something like this.

Not that you said it would be used for food, but when pictures of stuff like this start floating around the net people will build it without thinking about it.

Very nice first post!  I like it a lot.  A small box top or a door front to a small wall cabinet come to mind for me.

A reply to ben_r_; yes, I agree with you. I have no idea what is in the glues used to make the plywood, so perhaps not a good idea as a cutting board. I have to admit though, I was more concerned about its robustness as a chopping board, seeing as its just many, many tiny pieces of wood all stuck together.

The wife is happy with it as a board for placing hot dishes though.  [smile]
