Entry bench

A couple weeks ago I delivered this hickory entry bench to a friend/client. He loves all things hickory and hates the word plywood.

The entire piece is built of glue ups, if you have worked with hickory you will appreciate that it often has a mind of its own when it comes to being straight and flat. I used somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 Dominos in the assembly and I'm positive I couldn't have finished it as well, or as quickly, without my Domino.

I finished the piece with a coat of "natural" finish (basically oil) and sprayed three coats of Minwax Polycrylic. This was my first time using my new-to-me (used) Lex Are 60-C spray rig - light years ahead of my old compressor-driven gun.

Wow -- that has great character.  I like the switcharoo it looks like you pulled on the drawer fronts -- where the one in the middle looks like it's been flipped 180 degrees.

I too am a big fan of hickory. The colors produce so much character, but that piece of furniture is over the top with character! I like it

Thanks for the generous compliments. The drawers were glue ups as well - I worked hard to try to piece them together in a way that made them look like they possibly could have been from the same board.

I am very glad to see you joined sapwood to sapwood so there is a nice organic flow to the figure.
It really bugs me to see light sapwood joined to dark heartwood separated by an arbitrary straight line.

Great work!  The way you arranged the boards really makes the best of the grain.  And the uncomplicated form of the piece lets the wood shine.
