Ok, guys, when it comes right down to it I'm just a computer guy working for a tool company.  Granted, I use the tools and know a lot about them.  But I'm not a pro and my skills are not nearly that of our forum members, so cut me a little slack.  Here's the entryway cabinet I have talked about in recent threads.  The wife saw something very similar at a store in town and I said "ah, I'll just build you something like that for a lot less money".  And, I did.

Design time = minutes
Construction = a few hours over the course of a weekend
Time to get to this stage = ~a year

What can I say... It was nearly done.  Isn't that close enough?!  Well, after some "persuasion" from the boss, I finally took it apart and glue it up, sanded it all down and laid down several coats of paint.  I say "took it apart" because it sat there in the entryway of the house for nearly a year just Dominoed together in a dry-fit state.  The wife had even sat knick-knacks on it and everything.  Guess she thought it would never get done.  [embarassed]

Even though my goal was to get some clear coat laid down this weekend, the planets weren't aligned and I spent the weekend taking the kids to Avatar 3D at the IMAX (a must see), playing in the snow with my youngest, watching some football and lounging.  Maybe next weekend...

Anyway, Festool's so fast, easy and smart even a computer/web guy can use it and get decent results.

Looks good Shane - so where are the construction details and photos :-)  Looks like you got a good finish w/ the Earlex.

You've got to like the ability to dry fit using the domino and have it actually sit there and stay assembled.  I love my Domino!

Fred, if I thought any of you guys could learn something from my techniques, I would have taken photos during the process  [tongue]

I do have a couple of photos of it sitting there dry-fit assembled.  I did take the time to actually screw the door hinges in place to keep the doors from falling in the floor.  In this photo, there are literally no fasteners or glue other than the screws for the hinges.  1x3 face frame construction, edge joined panels, birch ply for the back, pine for the rest since I knew the wife wanted it painted.  All of the joinery is Domino tenons.  I used the TS, MFT/3, Kapex, OF 1400, Rotex, DTS and LS 130.

Only 1 year to finish?

I have several projects that still have the tools sitting by them for over 2 years now.

I think the Mrs. should be happy, you got that done in record time!!

Shane,

You done good.  You should be proud.  Even though you are a self proclaimed computer geek, you deserve this:  [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

Looks great!

Shane, I agree with Darcy.  the bookcase closet doors I posted last year took well over two years - all but about month was sitting around thinking about it.  My wife just doesn't understand the "think time" involved for a successful project :-)

Looks great Shane! And just think, if you start now you might be able to finish the next project in time for Christmas. ;D

Nice job Shane!

three questions:

- could you detail how you did the finish?

- could you provide the overall dimensions?

- the legs look like they are tapered from both angles.  Is it just 3/4 material dominoed at the corners.

I think matching end tables by easter could happen!

Whoa! Christmas... Easter... are you guys talking 2010?  [blink]  Sounds like I need to pace myself even more based on some of the other guys, not speed up.

Neil, for the finish I have laid down several coats of flat black latex paint.  I sanded very lightly using the DTS because of it's small stroke between coats using 400 grit Brilliant just to knock down any minor imperfections.  The paint was sprayed using the Earlex 5000 HVLP that I talked about in a recent thread.  I have General Finishes water-based poly to spray as a clear coat.

The legs are tapered on both sides to resemble the styling elements of the furniture we have near this piece.  It is all 3/4 material and the corners are dominoed.  Dimensions are approximately 40" (W) x 14" (D) x 35" (H).  It was designed to specifically fit this space.

Sadie (our boxer) already has a nice storage basket for all of her bones and toys but I may construct a "bed" frame for her pillow at some point.  Luckily, she's young and the odds are good that it will be finished in time for her to get some use out of it.

Thanks for all of the positive comments.

Edit: I forgot, I started with a tinted primer as a base coat.

Looking good! Are those touch to open doors?

Nope, those are don't have the pulls installed yet doors  [big grin]  Guess I'll need a follow up post once it's 100% complete.

Sweet.  Great job!  But now the wife knows you can build a piece of furniture in a weekend.... oh oh!

Shane,

Nice work, I really like that.  I need to build something like that for my wife..

Very nice cabinet Shane. Only 1 year to make it, please that's quick compared to how long it takes me to get things done. As long as it doesn't take another year to get handles on it you should be fine. The dog doesn't look impressed though. I think he needs a polish sausage.

Shane.  looks Great, you did a very good job...... [thumbs up] for this project........ did you remember to sneak all the tools you used back into the warehouse at night so they would not be missed?  lol

I really like that, you did a nice job.  I like the dog too, I have a boxer too.

Oops, I thought that was Shane lying on the floor admiring his handiwork! I mean, take the sunglasses off that he wears in his avatar and it's, well, an easy mistake to make. [embarassed]

Nice work Shane, sunglasses or not.

You mean thats not Shane on the floor  [tongue]

Seriously though, very nice for a computer guy, especially the black colour scheme, not a colour i would have picked but after seeing it i really like the black.
