The backing pad does not live forever. Sanding creates heat. The foam will harden, stop flexing, and then tear. I've replaced a couple over 20 years of (lightly) using a Festo forerunner of the 150/3. I use a protection or interface pad (or whatever they are call) made by Mirka as the Abranet mesh is hard on velcro. The very little extra softness they add to the hard backing pad is quite insignificant.
Consider the backing pad a consumable. There are cheaper versions available on Aliexpress. The quality is good.
