extended sanding pad RO90

What is the purpose of the backing pad #497418. I purchsed the extended pad # 496803 do I need to use the backing pad 497418 with it?

The extended triangle is thin and doesnt use a backing pad, de standard triangle does have one, with a snap-fastener in the middle. Which is easily replaced if the velcro wears. (I cannot find a picture at the moment of the article number you posted, apparently I m not so handy with my phone)
